Michelle Obama’s Journey to Becoming the “Most Admired Woman in the World”
There are some people who, when mentioned, cannot be limited to a title or a fixed role. Michelle Obama is such a person. She is not only the former First Lady of the United States but also an inspiration to millions of people, a symbol of resilience, intelligence and compassion.
Women who don’t let the world decide who they are
If there was one image to describe Michelle Obama, it would be a shining light in the dark. She is not a woman born to hide behind someone else’s halo. Whether entering politics as Barack Obama’s wife or becoming an independent social activist, Michelle Obama always carries her own charisma: confidence, intelligence, courage and love.
That temperament did not come naturally. It was forged during her childhood growing up in a working-class African-American family in Chicago, where she learned that knowledge was the weapon and effort was the key. It was forged during her years at Princeton and Harvard, where she learned that to make it in a world that did not favor people like her, she had to work twice, even three times as hard. And it was tested again when she entered the White House, where her every action, every word, was scrutinized through the lens of prejudice and politics.

But wherever she is, Michelle Obama does not let the world dictate who she is. She does not let herself be subdued by skeptical looks or invisible prejudices. On the contrary, she uses her presence to prove that women can be both strong and gentle, both intelligent and emotional, both independent and still know how to accompany and support others.
While in the White House, Michelle Obama did not let herself become her husband’s “shadow” but an independent voice. During her 8 years as First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama left a strong mark with meaningful social campaigns such as Let’s Move! to reduce childhood obesity; building the Let Girls Learn Fund to support 62 million girls in the world to get an education; the Reach Higher initiative to encourage young people to continue their education…
And after leaving the White House, Michelle Obama continued her journey of inspiration through social activities, speaking and even writing books. Her memoir “Michelle” released in 2018 became a global phenomenon with more than 17 million copies sold and is one of the best-selling memoirs in history. Or most recently, the book “The Light Within Us” was also strongly received when it was released.
It can be said that, no matter what role she plays, Michelle Obama always strives to do her best. Her life and career are clear evidence of the power of education, dedication and the will to constantly improve.
From Fear of “Not Being Good Enough” to Global Icon
From a young age, Michelle has struggled with the question: “Am I good enough?” This question has followed her from her childhood, when she was a little girl growing up on the South Side, until she entered prestigious schools like Princeton and Harvard, and even when she became the First Lady of the United States. She always felt the need to prove herself, to work twice as hard to be recognized. Even after the success of her book “Michelle,” Michelle still had moments of doubt and wondered, am I sharing too much? Do people really want to hear my story?
Michelle represents women who have felt “not enough”: not good enough, not thin enough, not perfect enough – but still stood up, learned to love themselves and continued to live with the light within.
In “Michelle”, Michelle is not afraid to talk about her struggles and fears on her journey to becoming the “icon” Michelle Obama is today. It is no longer a personal memoir but a story about a woman who is gradually becoming the best version of herself through the questions: Who am I? What kind of person do I want to be?

The second memoir, “The Light Within Me,” is the reflection of a person who has gone through a journey of finding identity and wants to share what he has learned. No longer a chronological memoir, “The Light Within Me” focuses on lessons and experiences that are instructive, helping readers overcome challenges in life.
Michelle Obama wrote this book in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and political and social unrest in the United States. She understood that many people were feeling confused, disoriented and in need of encouragement.
The book’s special point is not in its flashy stories or far-fetched philosophies, but in its simple honesty. Michelle Obama is a woman who has lived at the center of power and fame, but she does not paint a flashy portrait of herself. Instead, she tells her story with sincerity and simplicity, bringing a feeling of closeness like a friend whispering to her. She is also afraid, also worried about gains and losses. She also has her own weak moments – times when she doubts her own worth, times when she worries about whether she is doing the right thing – and this is what makes readers feel close. Because, who among us has not been confused about the future? Who has not feared that they are not good enough?
One of the most profound lessons Michelle Obama brings to the book is self-awareness. She emphasizes the importance of knowing yourself, believing in your own worth, and not letting doubts hold you back. Everyone has fears, but what matters is how you choose to face them. Instead of trying to eliminate fear, we can learn to live with it, turning it into motivation to keep moving forward. That is a realistic and profound perspective from Michelle, because no one can completely escape insecurity, but we can learn to move forward despite the worries in our hearts.
This book not only helps readers find empathy and sharing, but also has an impact on society in raising public awareness about education, gender equality and mental health care. As soon as it was released, “The Light Within Us” quickly entered Time magazine’s list of “100 Must-Read Books of 2022”. To date, the book has been translated into more than 14 languages and published in more than 27 countries.
After a long wait, “The Light Within” – the next part of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s memoir series – will be released to Vietnamese readers in April this year.
