Most agreed Sunday’s Indiana Fever preseason game against the Brazilian National Team would have been an opportune time for Nike to promote one of its biggest stars — Caitlin Clark.
Especially since it marked Clark’s on-court return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa for the first time since she was drafted No. 1 overall by the Fever last April.
However, not a word about the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year was mentioned by the multibillion-dollar athletic apparel company, which signed Clark to an eight-year, $28 million contract, about Sunday’s game or Clark’s homecoming.
Nike’s silence didn’t go unnoticed.
Some fans criticized the company for its Clark-less social media activity given both the Nike and Nike Basketball X accounts posted about reigning MVP A’ja Wilson on Saturday following the Las Vegas Aces’ preseason opener.

More angry fans called out Nike on social media, pointing out that even Gatorade, which is also one of Clark’s sponsors, gave her a shout-out on social media ahead of Sunday’s preseason game.
“Real home court advantage. Welcome back to Iowa @caitlinclark22 ⚡️” the Gatorade X account posted.
While many fans blew up Nike’s mentions on X, and others furiously sub-tweeted about the lack of attention given to Clark, her boyfriend Connor McCaffrey took another approach.
The 26-year-old assistant coach for the Butler men’s basketball team simply took a shot at the Oregon-headquartered business by retweeting a post from X user @caitisland.
“.@Nike yall don’t got internet or what? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,” the message read.

McCaffrey’s social media shade didn’t go unnoticed either as several users on X applauded him for sticking up for Clark and calling out Nike for its highly questionable marketing decisions.
“PLZ DONT UNRETWEET THIS IS THE BEST [expletive] IVE EVER SEEN OMG😭😭” one fan wrote.
“You know @Nike messed up when her BF is even fed up lol. Y’all better get it together. You need her more than she needs you lol” another fan replied.
“Connor a real one,” a third fan added.
“This gonna make him unrt btw 😭😭😭 but Conner a legend for at least rt the FACTS,” one user remarked.
“Nike is literally screwing around, it’s No Wonder why their Brand/Stock is in the Toilet!” another user exclaimed.
As for the game, Clark and the Fever dominated Brazil as four players — Clark (16 points), Kelsey Mitchell (17), Aliyah Boston (11), and Natasha Howard (10) — reached double figures in a dominant 108-44 victory.
