The flight took off from the West Texas launch site at 8:30 p.m. Hanoi time and completed at 9 p.m. Katy Perry and the crew left the ship safely and healthily amid loud applause from everyone.

The 40-year-old singer raised a white daisy to the sky and then bent down to kiss the ground. She carried the flower with her throughout her journey into space. Katy said the flower is a symbol of life on Earth and the daisy is also the name of her daughter, Daisy. Katy Perry’s daughter and her family were present at the launch site, watching her mother throughout the journey.

The New Shepard spacecraft took Katy Perry and her all-female crew across the Kármán line – the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space, more than 100 km above the ground. The flight lasted 11 minutes and the astronauts had a brief moment to admire the blue planet in a state of zero gravity.

The spacecraft is fully automated and requires no pilot. Upon returning to Earth, the capsule lands gently under the aid of a parachute, while the boosters automatically land about two miles from the launch site.

Joining Katy Perry are MC Lauren Sánchez – Mr. Bezos’s fiancee and helicopter pilot, Kerianne Flynn – film producer, Aisha Bowe – former NASA engineer, Amanda Nguyen – Vietnamese-American space scientist and journalist Gayle King.

The flight was part of the NS-31 mission, the 11th project to the edge of space by the private space company Blue Origin, founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos. The event also marked the first all-female crew to fly into space since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo flight in 1963.

Before the departure, Katy Perry shared on Instagram that she was very happy that her dream of flying into space for the past 15 years was about to come true. “There are six of us, all women. This is a historic flight into space because it is the first all-female crew. I am so excited and have never felt so loved,” the 40-year-old singer said in a video an hour before the flight.

Before the stargazing trip, Katy Perry told the AP that she had always been interested in astrophysics and astronomy, astrology and the stars. The pop singer said of the historic flight: “I tell myself every day: I’m so brave, I’m so bold, I’m doing this for the next generation to inspire so many different people.”
