Angel Reese had to be held back by her team-mates after a hard foul by Caitlin Clark left Reese on the floor and incited a heated exchange. Reese and Clark respect each other’s talents but they are far from friends and in the Indiana Fever’s season opener against Chicago, it was again evident that there is no love lost between the two.

With 4:38 remaining in the third quarter, the Fever defence left Reese wide open under the basket. In a bid to stop an easy score, Clark committed a foul on Reese by pushing her with her left hand, which resulted in Reese hitting the deck. Reese promptly sprang up and headed straight for the Fever star whilst unleashing a string of expletives at the 23-year-old guard, appearing to say: “You crazy as f***” and “what the f*** is wrong with you?”

Reese had to be restrained by several Sky staff as she hurled the jibes towards Clark. At that point in the game, the Sky were trailing 56-42. After a pause in play, officials handed Clark a flagrant foul, sending Reese to the line where she sank one of two free throws.

Despite the confrontation, Clark was superb again as she inspired the Fever to a 93-58 season-opening triumph – tying the record for the second-largest margin of victory in franchise history on 35, just three off the all-time record which was set in 2010.

Reviewing her game, Clark said: “I think just keep getting better every single night. Continue to set my team-mates up. I know we put up 93 points and won by 30, but I felt like we could still could have been a lot better. So we go back to work.

“We have hard games coming up. That’s the thing about this league. You have a couple of days. It’s on to the next, on to the next. So how do we keep getting better?”
