Gale Monteverde never imagined that a simple business dinner in Mumbai would change his life completely. It was November 2024, exactly 26 years after he had established his empire of luxury wines and vineyards, and 23 years after he had lost his one true love. But that night, Gale, sitting alone in a luxurious Mumbai restaurant, had no idea that the past and the present were about to collide so impossibly.
This restaurant was one of his favorite places when he would come to Mumbai to meet with European businessmen. The dim lighting, old stone walls, and cozy atmosphere reminded him of the wine plantations of his youth, when money and success had shaped his life differently. He had arrived early because he had planned to meet with a French importer, but the man canceled at the last minute, leaving Gale alone to dine at a table for two.
At 54, Gale had learned to enjoy solitude. He had a few gray hairs near his forehead, which made him attractive, but he had built such high walls around his heart that few people could get close to him. After Amelia’s death 23 years ago, he had a few relationships, but none could fill the void she left.
As he cut into the steak he had ordered, Gale unconsciously turned the ring he wore on his right ring finger. It was a habit he had developed over years of anxiety and loneliness. The ring was a 200-year-old family heirloom, made of gold, with a large sapphire set and surrounded by smaller diamonds. It had been passed down from his great-grandmother to his grandfather, then his father, and finally to him. But most importantly, it was the ring with which he proposed to Amelia.
Family Story
The ring was unique. His grandfather had said there were only three such rings in the world, made by an Italian jeweler for an Indian aristocratic family in the 19th century. One had been lost in the war, one had been stolen, and now he had the third.
When Amelia died in that terrible car accident, Gale considered burying the ring with her, but ultimately decided to keep it close to his heart forever. Life continued after the tragedy, but never the same. Gale immersed himself in work and expanded his family wine business, making it one of India’s most prestigious wine companies.
His wines, from the Nashik and Pandharba regions of Maharashtra, were sold in India and abroad. Celebrities and international businessmen visited his vineyards, and his personal wealth had increased tenfold over the past two decades. But all this success seemed meaningless without sharing it with Amelia. She was his university mate, his true identity.
They laid the foundation of an empire together, planned for children, and dreamed of growing old in a village-style home they built with their own hands.
“Shall I serve you more wine, sir?” A soft voice asked.
Gale looked up from his meal and saw a young waitress standing in front of him. She was slender, about 23 years old, with long black hair neatly tied back, and the lines on her face evoked a familiar memory. She looked professional in her modern sari-like waitress uniform, but something in her demeanor suggested she had seen better times.
“Yes, please,” Gale said, extending his wine glass to him. “This is an excellent Nashik red.”
The young woman smiled and, serving the wine, said, “My mother always said that the best wine tells the story of the land it comes from.”
That statement made Gale look at her closely.
Special Wine
This comment was not expected from a young waitress, but could only have come from someone knowledgeable. “Your mother has excellent taste,” Gale remarked. “She used to work in this industry.”
A slight sadness crossed the young woman’s face. “She used to work in the vineyards when she was young, before I was born. She always told me that vineyards are like life.”
Gale nodded in agreement, curious.
There was something familiar in her tone, something he had seen in Amelia before. Then it happened—the young woman’s gaze fell on Gale’s right hand.
Her eyes widened. She blinked several times, as if in disbelief.
“Excuse me, sir,” she said in a trembling voice. “This ring… is the same as my mother’s.”
Gale’s world seemed to stop. He saw the ring and the young woman’s pale face.
“What did you say?”
“The ring,” he repeated, pointing with trembling fingers. “My mother has a ring just like this. She always said it was unique, there are only three.”
Gale’s heart began to pound. It was impossible. Absolutely impossible. The other two rings had been lost for decades. Except…
“What’s your mother’s name?” he asked in his strange voice.
“Amelia,” the young woman replied. “Amelia Costa.”
The name flashed through Gale’s mind like a lightning bolt. Amelia. His Amelia. But she was dead. He had identified her body. He had gone to the funeral. He had wept at her grave for 23 years.
“This…this isn’t possible,” he said softly, as if the walls of the room were spinning. “Amelia died in an accident.”
The young woman looked at him in surprise. “My mother had an accident, yes. She was in a coma for several weeks. But she never knew what happened to you. She was told you were dead.”
Gale suddenly felt weak. Twenty-three years. Twenty-three years of grief, loneliness, the pain of a broken heart. And all of it based on a lie? A terrible mistake?
“Oh, my God,” he whispered softly, tears streaming down his face. “Is Amelia alive?”
The young woman—he now realized it was his daughter—nodded, tears welling up too.
“She’s in Valencia. She raised me alone. Always talked about you. Always loved you.”
Gale looked at his ring, then at his daughter’s face—the daughter he never knew. Three lives, separated by a tragedy and a lie, were now about to be reunited after 23 years.
And in that same Mumbai restaurant, surrounded by hushed conversation and the scent of red wine, Gale Monteverde wept—not from grief, but from the hope he thought had died forever.
