In a small neighborhood, lived a father named Hariram Shukla. Age had grayed his hair, but the wrinkles on his face clearly reflected the struggles he had endured. Hariram worked as a clerk in a simple school. His salary wasn’t very high, but his dreams were lofty. His life had only one purpose: to educate his only son, Ramesh, and make him a great man. Hariram ji sacrificed all his youthful hobbies, small joys, and personal dreams. Whenever his neighbors got a new bicycle or radio, he wished he had something like that. But as soon as he saw Ramesh’s face, those dreams turned into books. He often skipped his essential medicines to pay his son’s fees. He even worked on school registration during holidays to support the household. But there was not a trace of complaint on his face. From childhood, he tried to provide Ramesh with every comfort and luxury. When the neighborhood children played in new clothes, Ramesh wore the same clothes. The only difference was that his father had bought them after months of saving. But Ramesh never understood the difference. For him, it was normal for his father to fulfill his every wish. Time passed. Ramesh grew up. He excelled in studies, and Hariram ji dreamed of him becoming a doctor or engineer. He hung Ramesh’s certificates on every wall of the house, as if they were his greatest asset. Whenever someone in the neighborhood said that Shukla ji’s son was so intelligent, Hariram ji’s chest would swell with pride. But behind that pride lay a pain. He mortgaged his wife’s jewelry to educate Ramesh. He often borrowed household groceries, even starving himself to buy his son’s books. He knew that poverty is a person’s greatest test, and he happily endured this test so that Ramesh would never suffer the brunt of poverty. Ultimately, his hard work paid off. Ramesh completed his studies and got a job in a multinational company. That day, Hariram ji’s eyes filled with tears, but they were tears of joy. He simply said to his son, “Son, now I have peace. My life’s purpose has been fulfilled.” As soon as Ramesh got a job, the atmosphere at home changed. New things began to arrive in the house, things Hariram ji had never even dreamed of for himself. Ramesh soon married Savita, a modern-minded girl. After marriage, Ramesh and Savita had a world of their own. Traveling, shopping, and attending parties. Time for their father gradually dwindled. Hariram would often sit quietly in a corner, reading the newspaper. But in his heart, he would think, “Maybe my son is busy now. He’ll definitely sit with me tomorrow.” But friends, time passed, and circumstances took a turn. Savita’s parents had settled abroad. Savita’s heart also settled there. She began pressuring Ramesh that they should also go abroad and live the high-class life there. Ramesh initially showed some hesitation, but when the company offered a posting abroad, he agreed. The problem now was where to place their father, Hariram. Savita bluntly told Ramesh, “Papa won’t be able to go abroad with us. Who will take care of him there? We have to focus on our new life. It would be better to leave him in an old age home.” When Ramesh heard his wife Savita’s words, a slight pang ran through his heart. He initially protested, but his wife’s insistence silenced him, convincing him that perhaps this was the right thing to do. The very next day, he decided that his father would have to leave the nursing home. In the morning, Ramesh took out the car, and Savita quickly put Hariram’s clothes in a bag. Savita went straight to her father and said, “Father, Ramesh is taking you out for a while today. Get ready quickly.” Hariram looked at his son for a few moments. Questions arose in his mind, but he remained silent. There was a slight seriousness on his son’s face, and that seriousness made him fear something untoward.
It certainly gave a hint. Still, without a word, they changed their clothes and got ready. When Ramesh and Hariram got into the car, the atmosphere was strangely quiet. The road hummed with traffic, but there was no conversation between father and son. Sometimes Ramesh would look out the window, and sometimes the father would silently look at his son. Hariram’s face held a strange silence, as if he understood that his son was leaving him somewhere far away. About half an hour later, the car stopped outside an old-age home. There was an old building in front, with the words “Asha Old Age Home” written in large letters on the door. The guard at the gate signaled the car inside. Ramesh drove inside and asked his father to get off. Hariram smiled gently and said, “Son, it seems you brought me here because I’m no longer needed.” Ramesh’s heart sank. He immediately replied, “No, Father, it’s nothing like that. I just have to keep you here for a few days.” A young woman was sitting at the reception desk, who asked Ramesh why. Ramesh said in a low voice that he had brought his father for admission. The young woman replied that the manager was currently out of town, and that admissions were impossible without her. Hearing this, Ramesh became very angry. He said, “Look, my flight is in a few days, and I can’t come here often. If you want, I’ll immediately donate a large sum of money. Just admit my father here.” The young woman politely explained that this was against the rules. Admissions were impossible without the manager under any circumstances. Ramesh held his head. His boss’s phone kept ringing, asking him to send the necessary documents. Work pressure, pressure from his wife, and now the responsibility of his father. Between all this, Ramesh felt completely entangled. Then the young woman said, “If you want, you can stay here tonight. The manager will return tomorrow and admission will be finalized.” Ramesh initially refused, but finally gave in and took his father to the room. Upon reaching the room, the father opened his small bag and took out a box of dry rotis and pickle wrapped in newspaper. He smiled at his son and said, “Son, last night I thought you would leave very early and I wouldn’t be able to stop you. That’s why I got up early this morning and made these parathas so I could eat them slowly and keep your memories with me.” Hearing this struck Ramesh’s heart. But he focused on his work, opened his laptop, and said, “Father, I have something very important to do right now. You should rest.” Hariram quietly packed up his plate. There was a slight moisture in his eyes, but a smile remained on his lips. He thought to himself, “Perhaps this is my life now. My son doesn’t have time. But his happiness is my greatest blessing.” The night deepened. Outside in the courtyard, some other elderly people were chatting. Some were crying for their son, others were remembering their daughter-in-law’s taunts. Hariram also lay down quietly, but Ramesh kept tossing and turning. He felt as if he was consigning his own father to loneliness. That was the night when the biggest test of Ramesh and Hariram’s relationship began. The night passed slowly. The soft morning sunlight streamed in through the room’s window. Hariram quietly got up, went into the courtyard, and sat in the small temple there. He held a rosary in his hand, and the tears welling in his eyes clearly betrayed how heavy his heart was. He bowed his head before God and said, “Lord, forgive me if I have made a mistake. But keep my son happy forever. May his life be prosperous. This is my greatest wish.” Ramesh, on the other hand, lay exhausted in bed after a late night at the office. As he turned, his eyes fell on the empty cot where his father had slept the night before. Ramesh immediately got up and went outside to see his father sitting in the temple. His face was relaxed, but the edges of his eyes were red. For the first time, Ramesh realized the depth of his father’s loneliness. But he immediately locked his heart and thought all this was sentimentality. Life should be lived practically. A short while later, Pawan, an ashram employee, brought tea. He was a 20-year-old man. He respectfully greeted Hariram ji and then said, “Grandpa, please have tea, along with biscuits.” Hariram ji smiled, caressed his head, and said, “Son, may God bless you. I see the Ramesh of my childhood in you.” Pawan’s eyes lit up. He replied, “Grandpa, everyone here considers me their son. You should treat me like that too.” Hearing this, Ramesh was momentarily startled. A slight sense of guilt rose within him, realizing that the affection he should have shown to a stranger was being shown to him. Just then, the ashram’s madam arrived. As soon as she saw Ramesh, she said, “Mr. Ramesh, I can understand your problem. You want your father’s admission to be granted quickly. But tell me one thing, have you ever thought about how many years your father sacrificed himself for your sake?” You’re finding it difficult to spend even a night with him? When he sacrificed his entire life for your one smile. Hearing her words, Ramesh’s face fell silent. He didn’t respond. He just lowered his gaze. Madam continued, “Many elderly people live here. No son has left.”
Someone’s gone, someone’s daughter-in-law. Everyone’s pain is the same. But there’s a difference. Some sons leave with a last hug, others without a word. Think about how you want to be remembered. Ramesh’s breathing became heavy. Just then, Pawan told Ramesh that there’s an elderly man in the ashram, Ramdayal Ji, who has been waiting for his son for the past eight years. His son went abroad and hasn’t returned since. Madam requested Ramesh to meet Ramdayal Ji for a while and introduce himself as his grandson, Rohit, and talk to him. At first, Ramesh found this strange. But Madam said, “Sometimes, feeling the pain of others opens our eyes.” Ramesh reluctantly got ready and went with Pawan to Ramdayal Ji’s room. In the room, a frail old man lay on a cot. His face was wrinkled, his eyes were strange, and a strange glint was lingering in his lips. As soon as Pawan said, “Grandpa, look, your Rohit has come!” Ramdayal Ji’s dim eyes lit up. He tried to get up from the bed and, touching Ramesh’s face with trembling hands, said, “You’re here, son. I knew you would.” This scene sent shivers down Ramesh’s spine. He had never imagined that a mere glimpse of his son could bring such joy to a stranger. Ramdayal Ji continued talking. “Son, how are you there? You missed me, didn’t you? Look, I saved some laddus for you.” He picked up a dried laddu from a nearby plate and placed it in Ramesh’s hand. Ramesh’s eyes filled with tears. At that moment, Ramesh remembered his father. He thought about how unfair it would be if his own father called him like that and he silently walked away. Hearing Ramdayal Ji’s words, Ramesh’s heart sank. He said, “Son, when you were little, you used to play in my lap. Today, you’re sitting in front of me, and I feel like my life’s austerity has paid off. Now, even if death comes, I won’t feel any sorrow.” Ramesh couldn’t speak. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he realized this scene was changing the course of his life. Ramesh’s steps faltered as he left Ramdayal’s room. His heart raced, and the same scene flashed before his eyes again and again: when that unknown old man had called him Rohit and tried to hug him. The laddu he had saved for his grandson was now in Ramesh’s palm, and that small piece kept him awake all night. He wondered if relationships were truly so precious that parents should be forced into loneliness. Coming out, Ramesh saw his father sitting in the courtyard. Other elderly people were gathered around him, talking about old times. Some were recounting memories of the freedom struggle, others were sharing their experiences from their jobs, and others were trying to laugh, remembering their children’s mischief. But Ramesh could clearly see that behind every smile lay a deep pain. Every person harbors a pang in their hearts that their loved ones are no longer theirs. As soon as Hariram saw Ramesh, he said, “Come, son, everyone here forgets their sorrows and becomes each other’s support. I’m thinking that if I have to stay here, at least I won’t feel alone.” When Ramesh heard his father’s words, something felt stuck in his throat. He understood that his father was saying these words just to lighten his mood. But there was a pang in his heart that his son was leaving them. Just then, Pawan arrived and told Ramesh that some of the women living in the ashram were preparing for a puja. He wanted Ramesh and his father to join in. Ramesh got ready and, with a different mind, went to the temple with his father. The light of the lamps and the sound of chants filled the atmosphere with devotion. For the first time, Ramesh saw how reverently his father stood before God with folded hands. Tears were flowing from his eyes. Ramesh realized that these tears were not only of devotion but also of loneliness and helplessness. After the puja was over, the ashram’s lady came to him again. He said simply, “Mr. Ramesh, what you saw yesterday is just a small part of the scene here. Every day, some Ramdayal ji waits for his son. Some daughter leaves her father here and never looks back. Imagine how it would hurt your heart if your father called you like this tomorrow and you didn’t return even after hearing it.” Ramesh couldn’t answer this question. It was as if a storm was raging within him. That night, Ramesh couldn’t sleep for a long time in his room. His father had fallen asleep, but Ramesh kept tossing and turning. He remembered that when he was young, his father would drop him off at school, walking barefoot so as not to ruin his son’s shoes. He remembered that whenever he fell ill, his father would call him to school. He would stay awake night after night, resting his hand on his head, and today, that same father is with him. But he’s reluctant to hold him close. This thought shook Ramesh to the core. When he woke in the morning, he saw his father fasting again. Pawan explained that Hariram had kept this fast for his son’s long life and success. Ramesh was stunned. He began to think that the same father he considered a burden, the same father who, regardless of his own health, was praying to God for his son’s progress. Tears welled up in Ramesh’s eyes. He wandered silently through the ashram all day. He saw elderly women looking out the window, dreaming of hearing their grandchildren’s voices. Every evening, an elderly man would look toward the door, hoping his son would come to visit. Ramesh’s heart was filled with sorrow. He kept thinking that if he left his father here today, his own face would be lost in the same crowd where no hope remains. As evening fell, Ramesh sat beside his father and gently held his hand. Hariram ji was shocked, as his son hadn’t shown such affection in a long time. Ramesh said in a trembling voice, “Father, please forgive me. I was about to commit a grave sin. I’ve realized that no matter how many responsibilities there are in life, no one can be greater than you.” Hariram ji looked at his son. His eyes were filled with wonder and affection. He placed his hand on his son’s head and said, “Son, I’ve never had any complaints against you. Your happiness is my greatest wealth. If you want to keep me with you, then consider all my wishes fulfilled.” The silence that had existed between father and son that night had now broken. But Ramesh’s heart still echoed with the question: would his wife, Savita, oppose it when he returned home? Would he be able to keep his father with him? That was the real challenge. Ramesh left the ashram with his father the next morning. There was a strange sense of peace on his face, as if he had been relieved of a great burden. He held his father’s hand tightly as he got into the car. Hariram looked at his son and said, “Son, make the decision that gives you peace of mind. I will be happy wherever you keep me.” These words deepened Ramesh’s dilemma. But he was determined not to leave his father alone under any circumstances. As soon as they reached home, Savita angrily opened the door. Seeing Ramesh, she said, “Have you abandoned Father? We had decided to go abroad. How will he live with us now?” Ramesh replied in a calm but firm voice. “Savita, I couldn’t leave Father. Last night I realized that if I leave him here, I won’t be able to live a peaceful life for the rest of my life.” Savita became furious and said, “If that’s the case, then consider your dream of going abroad over. No one will wait for us there. But here, your father will be a burden all the time.” Ramesh took a deep breath and said in a firm voice, “Savita, I have dreamt a lot, but no dream can be fulfilled without my father’s blessings. If going abroad comes at the cost of leaving my father, then I don’t want such happiness.” Hearing this, Savita remained silent for a moment. She realized that the tears in Ramesh’s eyes were not a sign of weakness, but the strength of a true relationship. Gradually, her anger subsided, and she bowed her head. Hariram ji stood silently. He was worried that he might create a rift between Ramesh and Savita. He said in a trembling voice, “Son, if I were to be with you in your life,
If you’re a burden, leave me in an old age home. I won’t complain. Hearing this, Ramesh immediately fell at his father’s feet. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he said, “Father, please forgive me. I had forgotten your sacrifices. You spent your entire life raising me, and I was thinking of leaving you alone. From today, this house is yours, and I promise I’ll never let you feel alone.” At that moment, the atmosphere changed dramatically. Savita stepped forward, touched her father’s feet, and said, “Father, please forgive me. Perhaps I didn’t understand that our lives are incomplete without you.” Hariram’s eyes welled up, but a smile remained on his lips. He embraced both his son and daughter-in-law. That night, Ramesh wrote in his diary: “No matter how big your dreams, they are incomplete without your parents’ blessings. Those who dream of happiness by leaving their parents behind should know that true happiness lies in the care of their parents.” Friends, this story teaches us that no one can replace our parents in life. If we leave them alone, we may achieve success, but we will never be happy from within. But friends, for those parents who never let our dreams die, shouldn’t it be our first duty to support them in their old age? And if you were in that son’s place, what would you have done?
