DeWanna Bonner update leaves Indiana Fever facing nightmare WNBA scenario
DeWanna Bonner’s absence leaves the Indiana Fever in a bind, with the team set to potentially lose two players in the coming weeks as the two-time WNBA champion remains out without a timetable
DeWanna Bonner’s absence leaves the Indiana Fever in a tough predicament in the coming weeks.
The two-time WNBA champion has missed the last four games – including the Fever’s most recent matchup against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday – for personal reasons. One of the games Bonner missed saw Caitlin Clark have one of her worst performances in her career, which head coach Stephanie White also missed for her own reasons.
As the Fever look to find some semblance of chemistry, essentially a quarter of the way through the 2025 WNBA season, Indiana will have to do so without Bonner. Speaking to reporters during shootaround before the Fever faced the Aces, White shared an update on Bonner, though she remained mum on when the team will expect the 37-year-old to return.
“Yeah, you know, she’s doing well. She’s doing well. Again, no timeline,” she told reporters, per the Indy Star. “You know, I think it’s day to day and for us to just make sure that we’re continuing to be supportive of DB in her time away.”
White’s comments come after she was asked before the Fever’s matchup with the New York Liberty if Bonner was on her way to a return. “I think she’s doing as well as she can be right now,” the head coach said at the time.
“We’re going to continue to support her and give her the time that she needs. I don’t anticipate her being here [for the win over the Liberty], and just with her right now, it’s supporting her and giving her what she needs.”
As Bonner continues to handle her personal issues, her absence puts the Fever in a bind, at least in terms of available bodies to play. With the two-time champion missing time and with no timetable for return, Indiana could be down to nine players if Damiris Dantas leaves for the FIBA AmeriCup.
The Brazilian will play for the national team and will miss five games as the tournament takes place from June 26 to July 8 in Chile. If both Bonner and Dantas miss time, the Fever will have fewer than nine players, thus allowing them to sign another hardship player.
Most recently, the Fever signed Aari McDonald as Clark and Sophie Cunningham both recovered from their injuries earlier in the season. However, McDonald was waived after Clark and Cunningham returned to the roster, despite how well the guard played in her short time with Indiana.
