In a small mountain village in northern India, Mr. Raghavan’s family plunged into poverty when he took out a massive loan to open a textile factory, but failed. As the debt mounted, the entire family was at risk of losing their land and ancestral home.
His twin daughters, Asha and Lalita, both 20 years old, beautiful and intelligent, became their last hope. The entire village erupted in uproar when Mr. Prakash – a widower, the richest businessman in the area – proposed marrying the two sisters together. He promised to repay the family’s debt of over 50 lakh rupees, in exchange for Asha and Lalita agreeing to live under the same roof with him.
Asha and Lalita were deeply saddened, but under pressure from their parents and fear of the family falling apart, they both agreed. The villagers said all sorts of things, some pitying them, some scorning them, but the two sisters simply held each other’s hands, telling themselves they would get through this together.
The wedding was grand, and the entire village had come to attend. But in the bright lights, Asha and Lalita’s eyes were sad and heavy. Mr. Prakash, though in his fifties, still dressed stylishly, but his demeanor remained cold and composed, leaving the two girls curious about his true intentions.
After the wedding, Mr. Prakash gave them a strange schedule: Asha and Lalita would take turns sleeping with him—three nights a week, and he would be alone one night. Although the sisters were upset, they accepted, believing it was the price to pay for saving their family. But the strange thing was that Mr. Prakash barely touched them. On the nights they spent together, he would simply sit by the window, staring into the distance, or quietly open an old photo album and fall asleep.
Asha and Lalita began to grow suspicious. If he had no intention of getting close to them, why did he marry them?
One night, while he was sleeping, Lalita curiously opened the album he always kept with him. She was stunned to see the photographs… two young women who looked exactly like her and Asha. Written beneath the photo was a vague caption: “Meera and Kavita – 1995.”
Lalitha realized they were Mr. Prakash’s two former wives, also twins. They were once renowned as beautiful women in the area, but after marrying Mr. Prakash, both mysteriously disappeared.
Lalitha trembled as she told Asha. Both were terrified, but dared not tell anyone. From that day on, they observed more closely:
In Mr. Prakash’s room was a wooden trunk that was always locked.
At night, he would often dream and mutter, “Meera… Kavita…”
Sometimes, he would look at Asha and Lalita with a strange, tender, and frightening gaze, as if reliving the past.
One day, Asha was pretending to be asleep, and Lalita sneaked out of the room at midnight, following Mr. Prakash. She saw him open the wooden trunk. Inside, there was no gold or silver, but old wedding gifts. The clothes, the combs, the necklaces… all belonged to Meera and Kavita.
At that moment, Mr. Prakash sighed and whispered:
“Don’t worry… I’ve found the old image…”
Lalitha was so terrified she nearly screamed. She understood: Mr. Prakash had married her and Asha not for sex, nor for money… but because he was haunted by the past, and wanted to relive those two lost images.
That night, when Lalita returned to her room, trembling, she told Asha everything she had seen. The two sisters clung tightly to each other, their hearts pounding. From that moment, they realized that this marriage was not only a sacrifice for the family… but also a potential nightmare.
They decided to find out the truth about Meera and Kavita’s deaths – these two twin women were Prakash’s former wives.
First Clue
The next day, while Prakash was away in town, Asha quietly walked into the village. She went to ask the elders. An elderly woman said, trembling:
“Meera and Kavita were the two most beautiful flowers in this area… but from the day they married Prakash, they slowly disappeared. At first, people thought they had gone somewhere else, but then no one ever saw them again. Rumor has it that every night there was a sound of crying coming from his house.”
Someone else whispered:
“I once saw Prakash going to the well behind the house at midnight, his shirt covered in mud… After that, Meera and Kavita were never seen again.”
Asha trembled. The rumors were vague, but they all led to a dark secret.
The Chest and the Basement
One night, Lalita pretended to be fast asleep. When Prakash left the room, she followed him. He opened the wooden chest and caressed everything as if it were alive. Then, suddenly, he pulled the rug from beneath his feet, revealing a secret door to the basement.
He slowly went down. Lalita, her heart pounding, turned back quickly to call Asha. Both of them, trembling, decided to find a way down there the next morning.
As soon as the sun rose, they took advantage of the lack of light and opened the basement door. A cool, damp breeze blew in. In the light of a small oil lamp, they saw yellowed walls, on which hung old wedding photographs of Meera and Kavita.
In the corner of the room, two large picture frames were covered with white cloth. When they pulled down the cloth, they were both stunned: Meera and Kavita’s faces were so similar that it seemed eerie, as if they were looking into a mirror of their past.
The Truth Revealed
There was also an old diary in the basement. Written on the yellowed pages, in a clear man’s handwriting, was the following:
“Meera… Kavita… You left me because of a cruel fate. I vowed to find you both again, and fate brought Asha and Lalita to me. They are your continuation.”
They both trembled, glancing at each other in bewildered disbelief. It turned out that Prakash had married them not only because of debt but also because of a morbid obsession with the twins, believing them to be the reincarnations of his two dead wives.
But the big question remained: how did Meera and Kavita actually die?
Planning the Exposure
That night, Asha whispered to her sister:
“We can’t let him continue tormenting and imprisoning us. We must find out the truth about Meera and Kavita’s deaths. Otherwise… we will become like them.”
They decided to secretly dig in the garden behind the house – where shadows of light were rumored to appear in the darkness.
Several hours later, beneath the old mango tree, the shovel struck something hard. Asha dug deeper… and when the moonlight spread, a torn white wedding dress appeared, wrapped in human bones.
Lalita burst into tears, while Asha stood still with trembling hands. The horrifying truth was clear: Meera and Kavita hadn’t left. They were buried in this very house.
Open Ending (Preparing for Part 3)
Footsteps echoed from behind. Asha and Lalita turned, their hearts pounding…
Prakash stood there, oil lamp in hand, his eyes gleaming madly. He said with a cold smile:
“You’ve… finally… found… where Meera and Kavita are sleeping.”
The air was thick. The two sisters clasped hands, knowing the real battle to the death had begun.
Asha and Lalita remained frozen before Prakash’s frantic gaze. Moonlight filtered through the leaves, illuminating his distorted smile, as if he had just found a buried treasure. At that moment, both sisters understood that if they didn’t act immediately, they would become Meera and Kavita’s next “replacements.”
Confrontation
Prakash approached, whispering in a heavy voice:
“You were born to take the place of Meera and Kavita… Don’t resist, because destiny has chosen you.”
Lalitha trembled, but trying to remain calm, she pulled Asha’s hand back. Asha clutched the soil tightly in her hand and screamed:
“You killed them! You are very sick!”
Prakash roared forward. In the chaos, Asha threw soil in his eyes, while Lalita grabbed a nearby shovel.
A Call for Help in the Midnight
Both of them screamed loudly, pleading for help from the villagers. The screams echoed in the quiet, lighting the few oil lamps in the village. Curious villagers came running out. Prakash shouted in panic:
“Don’t believe them! They want to tarnish my reputation!”
But when Asha trembled and pointed to the pit where the wedding dress and bones had been found, the crowd fell silent. An old woman burst into tears:
“Oh my God… this is Meera’s dress…”
The truth was revealed
The villagers gathered, and some men rushed to catch Prakash. He struggled, screaming:
“They never left me! I just wanted to keep them with me forever…”
His eyes were red, as if he had lost all sense.
Meanwhile, the village head and some others immediately called the police. Asha and Lalita fell to their knees and hugged each other tightly, both terrified and relieved that the truth had finally been revealed.
Climax
The next morning, the police excavated behind Prakash’s house. They found two skeletons that matched the rumors of Meera and Kavita’s mysterious disappearance.
Prakash was led away in handcuffs, but he was still laughing out loud, his eyes unwavering on the two sisters:
Asha… Lalita… you will never escape me. In my heart, you will always be Meera and Kavita…”
The two sisters shuddered, but they knew the nightmare was over. After years of silence and fear, the villagers now watched as the light figure disappeared into the police car.
A Sisters’ Promise
Asha and Lalita lit incense on the ground where the remains had been found and silently prayed:
“Meera, Kavita… you sisters, rest in peace. We will stand in your place, and will not let the ghosts of the past haunt anyone else.”
Dawn broke over the mountains, illuminating the weary but determined faces of the two sisters. They knew their lives would never be the same again, but at least… they had regained their freedom, and the truth had been revealed.
