When I turned 36, neighbors would often whisper: “Still single at this age? He’ll always be single!” The truth is, I had dated a few women before, but luck never seemed to work things out. Day after day, I quietly tended my small garden, raised chickens and ducks, and lived a quiet life.
One winter afternoon, while I was at the market, I saw a thin woman in tattered clothes sitting on the roadside, begging for food. What caught my attention wasn’t her tattered appearance, but her eyes—clear, gentle, yet filled with deep sorrow. I went up to her and gave her some cakes and a bottle of water. She softly thanked me, her head bowed.
Strangely, that night, I couldn’t get her image out of my mind. A few days later, I saw her again in another corner of the market, still looking just as miserable. I sat down next to her and started a conversation. Her name was Han. She had no family, no place to live, and had spent years begging on the streets.
Something stirred inside me. Looking into her eyes, I suddenly said some words that even I found reckless:
“If you’re willing, become my wife. I’m not rich, but I can provide you with food and shelter.”
Han’s eyes were unbelievable. The entire market was buzzing, people whispered that I was crazy. But after several days, she nodded. I brought her home amid the shocked gazes of my neighbors.
Our wedding was simple, just a few tables full of food. There were gossips in the village: “Khai married a beggar, nothing good will come of it.” I ignored them—all I cared about was peace in my heart.
Life wasn’t easy after that. Han was clumsy at cooking and wasn’t used to farm work. But she was hardworking and willing to learn. Gradually, our quiet home was filled with laughter and the smell of hot food. A year later, our first son was born. Two years after that, our daughter was born. Every time I heard them call out, “Papa, Mom,” I knew my decision had been the best of my life. Then one day, a sudden event shook our lives. That morning, while I was working in the garden, I heard the loud sound of engines outside. Not one, but three shiny luxury cars pulled up at our gate. The entire village rushed to see.
Several men in sharp suits got out of the cars. They looked around, then bowed respectfully to my wife:
“Miss, finally, we found you!”
The entire village held its breath. I was shocked, at a loss. Han’s face turned pale as he held my hand tightly. A middle-aged man approached, tears in his eyes:
“My daughter, I’ve been looking for you for ten years…”
I was silent. It turned out my wife wasn’t the poor, beggar woman everyone assumed she was. She was the daughter of a wealthy family whose parents owned a vast business empire. Ten years ago, due to a family feud over inheritance, she ran away from home, refusing to be a part of the conflict. During those wandering years, she chose to live as a beggar to avoid being caught.
Hanh wept as she recounted her story, her voice trembling:
“I once felt I had nowhere left to return. If you hadn’t opened your arms to shelter me, I might not even be alive today.”
At that moment, I finally understood. Everything she had endured wasn’t because she was weak, but because she wanted to escape the vicious cycle of wealth and luxury.
Her father looked at me, holding my hand tightly:
-Thank you for taking care of my daughter, for giving her a true home. Money, cars, and wealth are just superficial things. Your heart is what truly matters.
The entire village was shocked. The same people who once mocked and demeaned me now bowed their heads in silence. They never imagined that the “beggar” they hated was actually the daughter of a billionaire, and that I – a humble farmer – would become the son-in-law of such a powerful family.
But for me, those titles no longer meant anything. I just looked at Han, seeing the same purity in his eyes that had been there the day we first met at the market corner. It was then that I realized that, regardless of her status, I loved her not for her past or family, but for who she really was—a noble, humble woman who had walked with me through the most difficult days of my life.
From that day on, our story became a legend in the village. People stopped gossiping and instead began praising her. As for me, I simply thanked fate that I had the chance to meet Han on that winter afternoon so many years ago.
