Toni Braxton and Birdman have been secretly married for eight months, but newlywed bliss was short-lived, according to a TMZ report.

The singer, 57, and rapper, 56, married on Aug. 8, 2024, according to TMZ, which cited court documents. Two weeks later, Braxton filed for divorce and listed their date of separation to be Aug. 10, 2024 — just two days after saying “I do,” according to divorce documents first obtained by TMZ.

The pair are only identified by their initials “T.B.” Toni Braxton and “B.W.” for Bryan Christopher Williams in the documents, where Braxton and her attorney called the marriage “irretrievably broken.”

Five months later in January, Braxton dismissed the divorce petition, which Birdman signed off on.

Braxton and Birdman’s reps did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

The couple started dating in 2016 when Braxton found a strong support system with the hip-hop artist amid her battle with lupus. Two years into their romance, the R&B star told PEOPLE in 2018 that she never expected her friendship with her “bestie for like 15 or 16 years” would turn into something more. “I never thought we would be dating or getting married,” she said.

In February 2018, Braxton confirmed that she and Birdman were engaged after two years of dating in the trailer for a new season of her family’s hit WeTV reality show Braxton Family Values. She excitedly told her sisters, “I have an announcement to make — I’m engaged!” while flashing her canary yellow diamond ring that Birdman designed.

By the start of 2019, though, the two musicians revealed that they no longer had plans to tie the knot. At the time, they scrubbed their Instagram accounts clean and unfollowed each other.

According to E! News, Birdman had written “It’s over” on his Instagram Story before clearing all his posts. Meanwhile, Braxton posted a New Year’s Day post on Instagram speaking about new beginnings. “Starting a new chapter isn’t always an easy choice… but ALWAYS choose to be chosen,” she wrote in part.

Later that month, the pair sparked reconciliation rumors after reuniting onstage at Braxton’s tour stop at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Braxton addressed fan speculation that she and Birdman were married in a private ceremony by writing, “#FAKENEWS,” over a screenshot of a news story featuring photos of the two music stars and the headline, “Congratulations! Toni Braxton & Birdman Married In A Private Ceremony In Mexico!”

“My dear friend @birdman and I are not married…never been married. We are both single,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.
