Cardi B interviews Joe Biden and has ‘whole list’ of demands

The US rap star discussed a range of issues with Mr Biden including racism, healthcare, education and the coronavirus pandemic.

The unlikely pair of Cardi B and Joe Biden have sat down for a video call to discuss issues including coronavirus, racial justice and the upcoming US election.

The US rap star interviewed Mr Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, ahead of November’s vote as they discussed young people’s hopes for the future of their country.

“I have a whole list of things that I want our next president to do for us,” she said in the Elle magazine interview. “But first, I just want Trump out. His mouth gets us in trouble so much.”

Her first request related to racial inequality.

“I feel like black people, we’re not asking for sympathy, we’re not asking for charity – we are just asking for equality,” she said.

“We are asking for fairness, and we are asking for justice. That is all. We want to feel like Americans.”

Cardi B argued for free university education and healthcare “especially now that people are getting sick left and right”.

Mr Biden responded to Cardi B’s calls with praise, saying: “One of the things I admire about you is that you keep talking about what I call equity – decency, fairness, and treating people with respect.”

The rapper asked Mr Biden how he could keep his promise of free education without ballooning taxes, to which Mr Biden said he would boost mainly corporate tax.

Cardi B also made clear her dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with the US having the highest recorded death toll from the virus.

“I don’t want to be lied to – we’re dealing with a pandemic right now, and I just want answers,” the rapper said.

“I want to know when this will be over. I want to go back to my job. One day he’s telling them this is nothing, that people need to stop getting tested. Next thing you know, (he has) a mask (on his) face.

“I want a president to tell me what the steps are for us to get better, to tell me, ‘This is why it is taking so long, this is why other countries are doing better than ours’. Tell me the truth, the hard-core truth.”

Mr Biden said Cardi B’s generation had the power to change the future.

In 2016, if 18 to 24-year-olds had voted in the same percentage as the rest of the population… we wouldn’t have (Trump), we would have had Hillary Clinton,” he said.

“Your generation can own what happens in the next election.”

There were lighter moments in the interview, with Mr Biden joking they could be related because his daughter called him “Joey B”.

He also admitted he would “make mistakes as president”.

“But I’ll admit to the mistakes I make, and you’re never going to have to wonder whether I’ll keep my word,” Mr Biden added.
