The day my brother-in-law learned he was seriously ill and might not survive, he suddenly called me into the room, asked his wife to leave, and made a shocking proposal to me about a large sum of money and the child… and this happened…
Raghav was a quiet, reserved man, but he always loved my sisters and me very much. He had worked hard for many years to take care of his small family. He had thought that in the coming years he would be able to rest and recover from his failing health, but the disease came quickly and brutally.
One afternoon, as I sat by his bedside in a Mumbai hospital, Raghav suddenly called me into the room, his eyes wide with a strange look. My sister-in-law, Anika, had just left, as if everything was pre-planned. Raghav pursed his lips, his thin hands gripped mine tightly, and then said – You… are the person I trust the most. I know you will understand me.
I was extremely shocked. Even though we were just brother-in-law and brother-in-law, Raghav and I had always had a deep bond. He never treated me like a stranger.
Raghav took a thick envelope from under his pillow, gave it to me, and continued:
– This is the money I’ve saved over the years. I want you to keep it so you can help Anika and Aarav in the future. I don’t have time to care for them anymore. But I want a promise from you – to protect them, to protect this family.
Before I could say anything, he said in a low but heavy voice:
– You have to protect Anika… but not just her. You have to protect Aarav. The child… is not mine. He… is someone else’s child.
I was stunned. Aarav – the child I always considered your biological child – turns out to be someone else’s blood?
Raghav looked at me, his sad eyes filled with a thousand thoughts:
When Anika and I got married, he was in a relationship. For various reasons, that man couldn’t accept the child. He decided to marry Anika and adopt Aarav as his son. I never wanted you to know, but now… I don’t have time.
He took a deep breath and continued:
I signed the adoption papers so that Aarav would have a name and be cared for like any other child. But after I die, people will come looking for him. You have to protect him, don’t let anyone know this secret.
My throat choked. Raghav loved his wife and child so much that he accepted a painful truth after hiding it for so many years. Now, he’s handed that secret and responsibility over to me.
I bowed my head and promised to obey him. He nodded slightly, as if he had shed a last burden.
Anika returned to the room, her eyes red. I just looked at her, said nothing, then quietly took the envelope and walked out.
The story of this secret, this family, began from that moment. A secret of love, responsibility, and sacrifice – one that not everyone can fully understand. But I will keep my promise, protect Aarav, and take care of this family, even if it means the biggest challenge of my life.
Part 2 – When Darkness Knocks
Raghav passed away on a gloomy winter morning in Mumbai. The funeral took place in a drizzle, with Anika and Aarav crying and chanting. I stood quietly behind, still holding tightly to the envelope of money and the promise I had never given up.
In the first few days after the funeral, Anika was almost exhausted. Aarav was unusually calm, his tiny eyes grasping the immense loss. Everything seemed peaceful until the 13th day after Raghav’s death.
That afternoon, when I had just dropped Aarav off at school, a shiny black Mercedes pulled up right in front of the house. A tall, wiry-faced man stepped out of the car, his sharp eyes scanning the house as if searching for something. Behind him stood a noble woman, wearing a red sari embroidered with gold, and with glittering gold bracelets on her wrists.
The man approached, his voice low but full of pressure:
– I am Vikram Malhotra… Aarav’s biological father.
I was stunned, my heart pounding. Raghav’s dying words echoed like thunder in a clear sky. Anika exited the house, her face instantly turning pale.
– Vikram, you have no right to come here! – His voice was trembling but firm.
The woman sitting next to him pursed her lips slightly and interrupted:
– We haven’t come to ask for permission. We’ve come to take our son.
Aarav hugged me, his small hand shaking. I stood in front of him, a chill running down my spine.
“Raghav has signed the legal adoption papers. Legally, Aarav is his and Anika’s child,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm.
Vikram narrowed his eyes:
“Laws… can change. And the truth… cannot be denied.”
The woman – I guessed Vikram’s wife – suddenly lowered her voice, but every word was venomous:
“The boy has Malhotra blood in him. We won’t let him live in such poverty.”
I looked at Anika, trembling in the small house, and realized that the “poverty” they were talking about wasn’t just material. I realized something—they didn’t want Aarav just because of blood ties… but for something else.
Because just a few days later, I heard from a friend who worked in the court: the Malhotras were embroiled in a major property dispute, and Aarav—as Vikram’s biological son—could become their heir.
