It had been two weeks since Humayun had given birth, but the small house was still filled with the sound of a baby’s cries and the faint smell of milk. At first, everything seemed normal. Humayun silently endured the postpartum back pain, trying to hold the baby, clean, and cook. She didn’t want to disturb her husband. But the pain increased day by day, forcing her to move every inch around the house, and many nights she couldn’t even lie down straight.
Whenever Humayun complained, just wanting to say: “Atul, listen, it’s hurting a lot, please help me,” her husband – Atul – would furrow his brows and give her an irritated look.
“Are you faking pain again? Every wife is exhausted after giving birth. Stop complaining, you’re deliberately making your care a burden,” he would say in a low, cold voice.
Humayun pursed her lips, tears welling in her eyes, but she tried to swallow. She knew Atul loved the baby, but he never understood the pain a woman endured after childbirth. She didn’t dare tell the doctor about the numbness from her back to her feet, knowing Atul would say she was “exaggerating things.”
But as the days passed, Humayun’s condition worsened. The back pain, numbness in her legs, and pain spread so much that she couldn’t stand on her own after sitting for long periods, and she couldn’t hold the baby constantly. She had to lean against the wall or ask her mother-in-law (Mataji) for help.
One evening, after feeding the baby, Humayun sat on the floor, clutching her back and moaning.
“Look, Atul, how much pain I’m in!” she said with difficulty.
Atul stood next to her, the same anger evident on his face: “Do you want to be pampered again? Are you pretending to be in pain just because you want me to serve you?”
Humayun broke down, tears streaming down his cheeks. He had never felt so humiliated. Every word his husband said stabbed him in the heart.
That night, Atul went to bed and turned on his laptop to watch a movie. Coincidentally, because he had seen the security camera on in the living room the previous day, he clicked on the system and began watching footage from the past few days—primarily to check if there were any strangers outside.
Initially, he just wanted to fast forward, but the scene that appeared stopped him. On the screen, Humayun was sitting on the couch, looking normal. But immediately after, came the scene that took Atul’s breath away.
Initially, Atul just wanted to move on, but the scene that came on stopped him. On the screen, Humayun was sitting on the couch, looking normal. But immediately after, came the sight that took Atul’s breath away.
Humayun, trying to get up to hold the baby, slowly slipped inch by inch. She leaned on the couch, then sat down on the floor, clutching her back, groaning in pain. She didn’t stop there; she tried to get up again, her whole body trembling, her legs almost unmoving. After taking only a few steps, she had to sit down again.
Atul watched all this, and his heart sank. He had never imagined his wife’s pain would be so intense. Humayun was struggling every moment, and he, on the contrary, kept accusing her of pretending, of trying to be pampered.
He rewound the video and saw footage from another day: Humayun was trying to clean the house while caressing the baby. Every time she bent down to pick something up, she would groan softly, her hands trembling. One day, as she walked around the house with the baby in her arms, each step was a silent battle with pain.
These scenes, undeniable, stunned Atul. His heart was pounding. He remembered the words he had said, his suspicious gaze, his scolding.
He stood up and ran to the living room. Humayun was still sitting on the floor, holding the baby in his arms, his eyes closed, trying to suppress the pain so the child wouldn’t cry. Atul bent down and touched his wife’s back—it was cold and stiff.
“Humayun… are you in so much pain?” Her voice was trembling, no trace of confidence or doubt in it.
Humayun opened her eyes, looked at her husband, tears threatening to flow. “You… you didn’t believe me? I… I wasn’t pretending…”
Atul hugged Humayun tightly, her own tears welling up. They were silent for a while, the only sounds being their heavy breathing and the sound of a child sleeping in its mother’s arms.
After that day, Atul completely changed. He stopped doubting, stopped complaining. Every day, he, along with his mother-in-law, cared for Humayun, helped her with the baby, the housework, and gradually, Humayun was able to get enough rest. He even took Humayun to the doctor, prescribed painkillers and physiotherapy to help his back heal.
Time passed, and Humayun gradually recovered, but what Atul always remembered was the image of his wife struggling on the floor, captured on camera—an image that awakened him. He understood that a woman’s pain after childbirth was not a game, not an excuse to be pampered. It was real suffering, and a truly loving husband should always stand by, understand, and protect her.
One evening, as Humayun was putting the baby to sleep, Atul gently placed his hand on her back and whispered: “Forgive me… I will never doubt you again. You are the mother of my child, my wife, and you are my whole world.”
Humayun looked back, a tired but warm smile on his face. She knew he had truly awakened, truly understood. And from that moment, they grew closer than ever—not through words, but through empathy, care, and true love tested through pain and tears.
The camera in the living room, a silent witness to every story, still recorded everyday moments—but this time, Atul looked at the screen gratefully. He had seen the truth. He had been broken… and then rebuilt their love with respect and understanding.
Even after that, life was difficult, lack of sleep due to the baby, and the pain sometimes returned, but Humayun was no longer alone. Atul was always with her, holding her hand, walking her through every step, every pain. And every time he looked at his wife, he remembered that moment when she broke down in front of the camera—the moment when her eyes opened, and true love began.
