Even two days after Priya’s funeral, the atmosphere in that small house in a village in Bihar was heavy as lead. Her husband, Amit, had barely slept, his eyes dark with grief at his wife’s loss. Priya had died suddenly in a motorcycle accident while returning home from the market, leaving him and their seven-year-old son alone.
Although the doctor had concluded that the cause was a severe brain injury, Amit was still in agony, feeling that something about his wife’s death remained unexplained.
At midnight, unable to bear the agony, Amit quietly walked a few hundred meters from the house, carrying a bundle of incense. A cool breeze blew through the rows of stone pillars, casting a faint moonlight over Priya’s newly dug grave. Amit sat on his knees, trembling, burning incense, when suddenly he heard a strange sound—as if the ground was gently turning.
He looked up and was stunned: a figure stood right next to his wife’s grave, holding a spade, as if digging the ground.
Amit’s heart was pounding. He hid behind a nearby grave, trying to get a clear view. The figure was covered with a cloak, but in the moonlight, Amit recognized a familiar gait—it was Rakesh, Priya’s brother.
Amit was stunned. Why would Rakesh, who had cried the most at the funeral, dig up his sister’s grave in the middle of the night?
Unable to muster the courage to confront him, Amit quickly turned back and called his friend Vikram, who worked in the district police force.
The next morning, Vikram and Amit returned to the cemetery. Priya’s grave was covered as if it had never been disturbed, but Vikram found traces of fresh disturbances in the soil. They asked for permission to open the coffin and investigate, and a horrifying truth was revealed: Priya’s body was still there, but her gold wedding ring was missing. In its place was a cheap fake ring.
Vikram began investigating Rakesh. Under pressure, Rakesh confessed: he had a large debt due to gambling. Rakesh knew that his sister had a valuable gold wedding ring, so he secretly dug up the grave, retrieved the ring, and sold it to pay off his debt, hoping no one would find out.
Amit was deeply saddened, not expecting the man his wife had always trusted to commit such a heinous act.
But an even greater shock came when Vikram checked the traffic camera near the spot where Priya had met with the accident. It turned out that the truck that had hit Priya was not an accident. The driver was a henchman of Rakesh’s creditor, who had been hired to stage the accident to extort money from Rakesh at any cost.
Although Rakesh hadn’t directly murdered his sister, he knew about the plan beforehand but kept quiet, hoping that the creditor would forgive him after Priya’s death.
Amit was devastated upon learning the truth. The wedding ring—the sacred symbol of the couple—had caused his wife’s death.
That night, he returned to the grave, lit the last incense stick, and whispered:
—I’m sorry, Priya… I couldn’t protect you.
In the moonlight, Amit saw a faint smile from his wife, which then vanished into the night.
