Early Beginnings in South Africa

Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital. Born to a South African father and a Canadian mother, Maye Musk, he grew up in a country undergoing significant political transformation during the final years of apartheid. Musk is of British and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry, a heritage that would later influence his global outlook.

As a child, Musk displayed an early affinity for technology and entrepreneurship. By the age of 12, he had already created and sold the computer code for a video game, showing the first glimpses of his innovative mindset. However, his childhood wasn’t without challenges. Musk was often bullied at school, and in one particularly severe incident, he was thrown down concrete steps and beaten so badly that he required hospitalization.
