Caitlin Clark’s jaw-dropping performance left a former WNBA All-Star in awe

The Indiana Fever defeated the New York Liberty by a final score of 102-88 on Saturday. The loss represented the first defeat of the season for the Liberty, while it was a statement victory for Indiana. It was also Caitlin Clark’s first game after missing a few weeks due to an injury. She was certainly ready to return, dropping 32 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, two blocks and one steal. One specific sequence that saw Clark connect on three consecutive three-point shots in under a minute drew an honest response from former WNBA All-Star Rebecca Lobo on Monday, via ESPN First Take.
“We know how much Caitlin drives ratings, we know how much Caitlin drives attention on the WNBA,” Lobo said. “For her to come back (from injury) and do it in that way was just ridiculous. I mean, I’m sitting there, at the end of the first quarter when she had that 38-second stretch where she drained deep three after deep three after deep three, I was just sitting there thinking I’ve been around this league since 1997, I have never seen that in a WNBA game.
“Have we seen players go on runs? Of course we have, but not like that.”
Clark missed almost three weeks of action, yet she appeared to be in mid-season form on Saturday. It was an excellent performance from a player who is establishing herself as a true MVP candidate.
On Saturday, Clark was also extremely efficient, shooting 11-20 from the field and shooting 7-14 from beyond the arc. It wasn’t as if Clark simply reached 32 points by throwing up a lot of shots and shooting inefficiently — rather, Clark was especially efficient which made her shooting all the more important.
Caitlin Clark is almost unstoppable when she is locked in. There are very few shooters in the WNBA (or basketball in general) who can catch fire like we saw Clark do on Saturday. The fact that Lobo said she hasn’t seen anything in the WNBA like what Clark accomplished on Saturday in almost 30 years is quite telling.
Napheesa Collier is still the current MVP favorite and for good reason, as she has played at an elite level. A’ja Wilson is a three-time MVP as well. However, Caitlin Clark is making a case to be seriously considered for the award along with the superstars.
Clark and the Fever will look to continue to build positive momentum on Tuesday against the Connecticut Sun.
