The call to the Delhi Police control room ended abruptly as soon as it started.

—”Help, my parents, they…” — came a boy’s trembling voice from the receiver, but before he could finish a hoarse man’s voice shouted:

“Who are you talking to?” Give me the phone!”

Then there was silence.

The officer on duty made eye contact with his colleague. As per protocol, they had to confirm the situation even if it happened by chance. But there was something in the child’s voice—suppressed fear, a slight tremble—that made him more alert than usual.

A few minutes later, his patrol jeep came to a halt in front of a simple two-storey house in a quiet residential colony in Gurugram. From the outside, everything looked perfectly normal: a neat lawn, a fresh rangoli near the door, and the front door locked. But inside, the silence seemed unnatural.

The officers knocked. At first, there was no response. Then the door creaked and a boy of about seven years of age appeared. Dark eyes, neatly combed hair, still wearing the school uniform. His serious, almost adult gaze startled the policemen.

“Son, did you call us?” one of the officers asked softly.

And above them stood a man wearing a black hoodie, a kitchen knife shining in his fist.

The kidnapper stiffened at the sight of the uniform. The knife shook slightly in his hand as his grip tightened. He clearly didn’t expect the police to arrive so quickly.

“Police! Drop the weapon at once!” shouted the constable, pulling out his pistol in one fell swoop.

His partner quickly dragged the boy back into the corridor and covered him with the back of his body.

The standoff lasted only a few seconds, but it felt like forever. Eventually, the intruder exhaled sharply and dropped the knife on the marble floor with a slight sound.

Within moments, he was grabbed and handcuffed. The parents were free, gasping for breath as the tape was ripped from their mouths. The mother ran to her son and hugged him so hard that he screamed, but he did not resist.
