Friends, in a small village in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, lived a girl named Shruti. She had her parents and a younger brother at home. Her father had a government job, so there was no shortage of money. Since childhood, Shruti got everything easily, which made her arrogant. She considered herself the most beautiful and rich. It was her habit to taunt her friends about their clothes, make fun of someone’s looks, and look down upon poor people. She believed she would marry only a prince who had lots of money and looked no less than a hero. One day, her friend’s wedding was taking place. Shruti arrived wearing the most expensive dress and started praising her own dress and jewellery. When the groom’s procession arrived, she went to see the groom, but as soon as she saw him, she laughed loudly and taunted her friend, saying, “How will you spend your life? Your groom looks so ugly that looking at him would kill anyone’s appetite. He doesn’t even have decent clothes. Looks like he’s from a poor family.” Hearing this, her friend started crying bitterly. Her family came and tried to explain. The wedding happened, but everyone saw how arrogant and cruel Shruti was.
Anyway, a few days later, Shruti received a friend request from a boy on social media. She checked his profile, and her eyes lit up. A big farmhouse, expensive cars, a luxurious bungalow, a swimming pool—seeing all this, she was convinced this boy was extremely rich. Shruti quickly accepted the friend request. Conversations started, and she learned the boy’s name was Arvind. He worked abroad and was very wealthy. Whenever he video-called, he was sometimes standing next to a big car, sometimes at the farmhouse, or sometimes having fun in a swimming pool. Shruti became fully confident that she had found her prince.
Now, Shruti and Arvind’s conversations began to last longer every day. Love had deepened between them. Then one day, when Shruti brought up the topic of marriage, Arvind agreed without hesitation. Shruti wanted Arvind to come to her place, and Arvind said yes. The day Arvind was supposed to arrive, he video-called Shruti. On the phone, he was sitting in his big luxury car, wearing a white shirt, black sunglasses, and smelling of expensive perfume. Shruti was looking at him and thinking to herself, ‘Wow, what a rich and stylish boy, just like a prince.’ A little while later, when Arvind reached Shruti’s place, she was shocked. He didn’t get out of an expensive car but from an auto-rickshaw. The smile suddenly disappeared from Shruti’s face. “What is this? You left in a car, then why did you come in an auto?” Shruti immediately asked. Arvind replied with a slight smile, “Oh, my car got a flat tire, and I don’t know how to change the spare, so I sent the driver with the car and came by auto instead.” Shruti was even more impressed by his simplicity. She felt this boy was not only rich but also very simple, down-to-earth, and grounded. She started being drawn to Arvind even more deeply.
After a few meetings, Shruti fell completely in love with Arvind. Now she wanted to get married as soon as possible. She went home and showed her parents Arvind’s pictures. In the pictures, Arvind was sometimes standing in front of a big bungalow, sometimes by a swimming pool, sometimes amidst a line of expensive cars. Shruti’s father kept looking at the pictures but noticed something strange—in none of the photos were Arvind’s family members present. He asked Shruti, “Dear, where does his family live?” Shruti promptly replied, “Papa, his family lives separately. He lives alone in his farmhouse.” Her father was a little suspicious, but seeing his daughter’s insistence, he remained quiet.
Now it was time to get consent from Arvind’s family. But when Shruti asked Arvind to talk to his parents about the marriage, Arvind hesitated. “No, my father is angry with me. He doesn’t talk to me, so I want to have a court marriage. After that, we will live in our bungalow. Then gradually, I will convince my family,” Arvind said. Shruti saw no problem in this. She just wanted to marry Arvind. She called that same friend whose wedding she had taunted some time ago and said arrogantly, “You married a poor guy, right? See who I’m marrying!” She said proudly and sent the stunning pictures of Arvind. The friend saw the pictures but didn’t reply.
Finally, the court marriage happened. Now Shruti had become Arvind’s wife. After the wedding, Arvind started taking her to his home. Shruti thought she was now going to live in a palace-like farmhouse. But as soon as she reached Arvind’s home with him, her mind was blown. “What… what is this? Is this your house?” In front was an ordinary house—no farmhouse, no luxury cars, no swimming pool. The ground slipped from under Shruti’s feet. When she went inside, Arvind introduced her to his family—ordinary people living a simple life like common folks. Shruti’s mind started spinning. What was happening? Arvind was a millionaire, then what was all this? In the evening, when she asked Arvind, his answer made darkness cover her eyes. “My family doesn’t know what I earn. I don’t want to tell them. After some time, I will take them to the farmhouse too.” Now the biggest question before Shruti was—had she married a rich man, or was it all just a show? But the truth that was about to come out was even more shocking.
Shruti’s mind was racing rapidly. Why did Arvind lie to her? Why did he tell her everything wrong about himself? These questions made her restless. Anyway, days passed. It had now been 10 days since she arrived at that house. One day, she was talking to Arvind’s 8-year-old younger sister. Laughing and playing, she suddenly asked, “What does your brother do?” The little girl innocently replied, “Brother works at a very big sir’s farmhouse. When sir’s people come there for parties, brother takes care of things there.” Shruti’s heart started beating loudly. She quickly took out her phone and showed Arvind’s sent photos to her. The child happily said, “Oh, this is the same farmhouse where brother works! When the sir’s people go out, brother gets permission to stay there.” It felt like a strong shock to Shruti. Meaning Arvind wasn’t a millionaire but just a watchman? Her eyes widened in disbelief. She could have fought with Arvind immediately, but now she wanted to play another game. She decided in her mind that first, she would save herself, then expose this lie.
As evening fell, she told Arvind, “It’s been many days now; I want to go to my parents’ house.” Arvind said carelessly, “I don’t have time. You go alone. I’ll come to pick you up later.” Shruti smiled and nodded, and went to her parents’ house. But as soon as she crossed the threshold of her home, she went straight to her room, took out her phone, and called Arvind, saying, “From today, I won’t even set foot in that house. I want a divorce from you.” Arvind was shocked. “Why are you saying this suddenly? What happened?” Shruti angrily said, “You lied to me. You are not a millionaire. You don’t have any bungalow or cars. You are just a watchman. I don’t want to stay in this fake relationship anymore.” Now Arvind had nothing to say. He remained silent for a few moments, then said, “Shruti, we both love each other. Forget what happened. Please, save our relationship.” Shruti laughed mockingly. “No relationship lasts on a foundation of lies, Arvind.” Now Arvind got angry. “Fine. If you don’t come home, I will never give you a divorce in my lifetime.” Shruti’s hands trembled. She hung up the phone and started crying bitterly. Her parents rushed in. Her father hugged her and asked what happened. Sobbing, she narrated the whole story. Her mother sat holding her head, while her father took a deep breath and said, “Dear, I had told you before that you should investigate the boy before marriage, but you didn’t listen to us. Now you have to face the consequences of this mistake.” Shruti hugged her father tightly and said, crying, “Papa, I made a huge mistake. I was foolish, but now I understand that in life, truth matters more than glitz and glamour.”
Shruti’s father hugged her and then went straight to court. He filed a case of fraud and cheating against Arvind. When this news reached Shruti’s friends, they started mocking her. Someone laughed and said, “Wow, your prince was supposed to take you to a palace of dreams, but in reality, he turned out to be a pauper.” Another taunted, “See the result of arrogance? The one you considered beneath you is now mocking you.” Shruti’s face turned pale, but then she remembered her old behavior—how she used to consider herself superior, talk to her friends arrogantly, and show off that her would-be husband was so rich. Now she realized what a big mistake she had made.
Anyway, the divorce case started. In court, Shruti presented all the evidence—the pictures Arvind had sent her to show off his fake wealth. The judge heard everything, saw the evidence, and finally pronounced the verdict. Shruti and Arvind got divorced. But the story didn’t end here. The case of fraud against Arvind was proven. He had shown Shruti false dreams and kept her in deception. The law sentenced him, and he was sent to jail.
Now Shruti was standing alone—broken, defeated. But this was her biggest lesson. She didn’t listen to her parents, remained blind in arrogance, and eventually, her world fell apart.
