The bank clerk wife divorced her unemployed husband. 8 years later, the husband met her as a Manager. What happened next left the wife stunned. Friends, it was morning time. There was a bit of a crowd that day in the building of a government bank in Lucknow. Amidst that same crowd, speeding past on a scooter and heading inside was Kavya. Dressed in her bank uniform, a bag slung over her shoulder. On her face was that slight arrogance she had acquired over the last few months. Kavya had always been a hardworking girl. But after getting the job, her confidence had gradually turned into conceit. In the bank, she moved in circles among those who wore branded clothes, spoke in English, and constantly talked about their promotions. This environment had made Kavya just like them.
On the other hand was Arv, Kavya’s husband, a quiet, simple, educated boy. But one who was constantly struggling in his job search. He would go for interviews in the morning, return rejected by afternoon. In the evening, clinging to a corner of hope, he would fill out online forms again. He had just one wish. To get a good job and make Kavya feel proud.
The start of the marriage was good. Kavya liked Arv’s simple nature. Arv’s quiet way of speaking, sharing household chores, smiling in small joys. Everything was good for Kavya. But time changes things slowly. When Arv didn’t get a job for months, irritability began to increase on Kavya’s face. She would often say, “Arv, you do try, but you don’t have that thing which makes people great. You are just ordinary.” At first, Arv would laugh it off. But every taunt definitely stings somewhere deep in a person’s soul.
One day, while eating dinner at night, Kavya said, “How long will I handle everything alone? I’m tired of lying to everyone. People ask what your husband does, and I have no answer.” Arv said softly, “I’ll get a job, Kavya. Just a little more time.” But Kavya laughed. “I’ve been hearing this for months. You’ll keep trying, and life will pass by.” That night, Arv sat on the terrace for a long time. The city’s yellow lights were shining far and wide, and in their glow, no one could see the moisture in his eyes.
A few days later came the morning that Arv could never forget. He had gone to Kavya’s bank to surprise her. He was happy. His interview that day had gone very well. Maybe he would get the job. He wanted to tell Kavya his happiness immediately. He was standing in the bank’s corridor when Kavya came out with her colleagues. One of them asked, “Hey Kavya, who is this?” Kavya hesitated a bit and said, “This is my husband.” Another asked, “Oh, which bank does he work in?” That was the moment that shook Arv’s world. In an extremely light, embarrassed tone, Kavya said, “He’s unemployed right now. Looking for a job.” Her colleagues looked at each other. Someone stifled a light laugh. Kavya quickly tried to change the topic. But it was too late. Arv had heard everything. His steps automatically carried him out of the bank. His heart felt as if someone had wrung it. He didn’t understand what mistake he had made. He just knew that that day, Kavya herself, with her own hands, had trampled his respect.
That night at home, Kavya also spoke little. She didn’t utter a single word of apology. Instead, she said, “If you keep coming and going like this, this is what will happen. Improve yourself. The world salutes successful people. Not you.” Gradually, Kavya’s behavior changed. She started coming home late. Started getting irritated over every little thing. Sometimes she would say, “I am earning. My time is valuable.” Sometimes she would say, “Marrying you was perhaps my mistake.” Arv would silently listen to everything. He wanted to save the relationship. But relationships never work with one-sided effort.
Finally, one day, Kavya said in clear words, “I want a divorce. I cannot live with a person who is not on my level.” Arv was silent for a moment. He just said, “If that’s what is right for you, then okay.” A few months later, both were standing in court. Arv looked at Kavya for the last time. There were no emotions in Kavya’s eyes. Only decision. The stamp fell, papers were filed away, and a relationship ended.
After the divorce, Arv, without telling anyone, without calling anyone, picked up just a small bag and left Lucknow for Mumbai. He didn’t know where, how, that same city, that same world, that same fate was going to place him 8 years later. Mumbai city was completely different from Lucknow. When he got off at CST station, he had only a small bag and just enough money in his pocket for two-three days of food. That night, he sat on the steps outside the station and looked at the sky. Kavya’s words were echoing in his ears. “You are not worthy of me. You are the biggest mistake of my life.” Arv closed his eyes and for the first time felt that breaking isn’t just of the heart, but also of a person’s soul.
For the next few days, he stayed in cheap lodges. Then when the money ran out, he was forced to spend nights at the station itself. Beaten down by hunger, tiredness, and humiliation, he still wouldn’t let himself fall. He understood just one thing. The past broke me. But I will build the future myself.
One morning, as he was filling a water bottle, a middle-aged man came nearby. He said, “Looking for work? If you know computers, there’s hiring going on at a call center.” Arv was surprised. “Yes, I know the basics.” That man wrote down an address and said, “Go and try. In Mumbai, one chance is enough to change a person.” Arv went to that address. It was a small office, but there was a work atmosphere inside. The interview was conducted. He knew a little English. Computer basics. The interviewer thought for a few seconds and said, “Start from tomorrow.”
And so, from that day, Arv’s new life began. The salary of the first month was very low. But every time he went home, he felt that he was moving ahead, even if just a little. He did his office job during the day. At night, he would sit in a nearby library and learn skills. English communication, Excel, financial basics. He was changing himself. His quiet nature, honesty, and hard work made his seniors start liking him. Once, a mistake happened in the team. Everyone was scared. But Arv calmly helped solve that problem. The manager said, “You have leadership qualities. Never lose them.” Slowly, responsibilities on his shoulders increased. The company moved him from back office to the front desk. Now he would talk to customers, solve problems, and try to make every customer leave smiling. After 6 months, he got his first promotion. Then a second one after 1 year. He was moving ahead so fast that many people started praising him. Some said this boy will go very far. Some said honesty and hard work still work in this city. Mumbai had given him hunger, and that same hunger was pushing him forward.
Meanwhile, memories of Kavya were slowly fading. But the wound on his heart was still deep. Many times he felt like telling someone how the divorce had changed him. But he would always smile and talk, hiding his pain.
One day, suddenly, his company started a partnership with a big bank. The same bank he once feared as a customer. Now, a new position opened for him in that same bank. Assistant Manager. The interview was tough. The challenges were big. But Arv went fully prepared. He answered questions confidently. Finally, a board member said, “You are different. Calm, disciplined, grounded. We need people like you.” A few days later, he got the mail. “Congratulations. You are selected as Assistant Manager.” Arv closed his eyes as he read that mail. A strange, light relief came to his heart. As if someone had applied a balm to his old wound.
Now his life was changing. He started living in a good flat. Started wearing classy clothes. Started grooming himself. There was a confidence on his face that had never been there before. 3 years later, he got another big promotion. Now he was considered eligible to become the manager of his own branch. The board meeting happened, files went back and forth, and finally, the branch name that came up made Arv’s hands stop for a moment. ‘Amana Bank, Lucknow Branch’. Lucknow. That same city from where he had left broken. That same city where he had lost his respect. That same city where Kavya lived. Many emotions rose within him – pain, fear, anger, neglect. But finally, he took a deep breath and said, “The past will not define me. I will return, but this time not for anyone, only for myself.”
The transfer order had been issued. Arv was now the new Branch Manager of Lucknow. But he didn’t know that his return would change Kavya’s life in a way he had never imagined.
Anyway, when Arv set foot in Lucknow city after 8 years for the first time, there was a slight moisture in the cold air. His heart was calm as he looked out of the taxi window. But somewhere deep inside his eyes, an old pain was still faintly throbbing. The city was the same, the crossroads the same, the markets the same, the shops the same. Just one thing had changed. Arv himself.
Within a few days, he had become the new manager of Amana Bank. Introduction to staff, review of documents, checking systems, everything was going on systematically. The branch was well-organized. But many tasks were being done carelessly. Arv, without any arrogance, just said in a calm tone, “We will improve the branch together. No one needs to be afraid.” The staff found his simple nature somewhat different. They could never have imagined that a man in such a big post could be so humble.
In that same branch, there was another staff member – Kavya. Yes, the same Kavya who had taken away Arv’s respect, relationship, and hope from his life 8 years ago. When she got the mail that the new branch manager’s name was Arv Shukla, her hands froze for a moment. First, she thought maybe it would be someone else. But something inside was saying that life sometimes gives such twists where a person starts fearing themselves.
On the first day, reaching the office, her heartbeat was fast. She could never have expected that the man before whom she had spoken such humiliating words due to her ego would today stand before her as the head of her very branch. Everyone gathered in the meeting room. Kavya was standing at the back. The door opened and Arv entered. His face looked completely changed. Calm, composed, confident. There was a stability in his gait that is found only in people who have emerged from struggles and become successful. Kavya’s breath seemed to stop. Her legs trembled, but she composed herself. Arv started the meeting. Looked at all the employees, smiled. But his gaze did not stop on Kavya even for a moment. As if he had forgotten that name, that face, that past. But the reality was that he had forgotten nothing. He had just buried the pain deep within.
Days started passing. Arv would talk politely to everyone, teach work, correct mistakes. But his behavior with Kavya was only official. Absolutely professional, limited, distant. He would not answer any of her personal remarks. One day, Kavya mustered courage and stopped outside his cabin. Her heart was beating fast. Her eyes were moist. She said softly, “Arv, can we talk?” Arv, without looking up from his laptop, said, “On what subject?” His tone was completely flat. Kavya cleared her throat. “Personal… for a little while.” Arv said softly, “I don’t discuss personal matters in the office. If it’s work-related, say it, otherwise I am busy.” Kavya felt as if she had been torn from within. She returned with slow steps. For the first time, she felt that humiliation which she had once made Arv feel.
A few days later, there was some mistake of Kavya’s with a customer at the branch. The angry customer started shouting. Kavya stood silently. Her eyes were filling up. Just then, Arv stepped forward and said in a calm voice, “A mistake has happened, we will fix it. There’s no need to shout at anyone here.” He didn’t even look at Kavya. Just solved the customer’s problem. Kavya, broken, went to the cabin and cried. The man she had belittled in front of the world 8 years ago was today shaming her with his unspoken goodness.
That night, Kavya looked at her face in the mirror for a long time. She could see dark circles under her eyes, wrinkles, and years of pain. She whispered, “What had I done? Whom had I lost?”
The next day, she went to Arv again. This time, there was resolve in her eyes. “Arv, I need to apologize to you.” Arv said softly, “Kavya, not everything gets fixed with an apology.” Kavya’s heart sank. “I realize my mistake. I was wrong with you. I have changed. Really.” Arv took off his glasses. Looked at her for a moment, then averted his gaze. “Accepting a mistake is a good thing. But what is broken may not necessarily join back together.” Kavya started crying. She stepped back and felt as if her whole world had turned upside down.
Days passed. Kavya tried every day. With a smile, with a greeting, with a small conversation. But Arv would respond only as much as he would to any employee. No less, no more. She couldn’t understand why the man who once considered her the dearest thing in the world had now become a stranger to her.
One day, going home, Kavya said to herself, “Perhaps he hates me.” Then she answered herself, “And I am the one who gave him the right to hate.”
Meanwhile, Arv sat in his flat, looking out the window. The Lucknow air reminded him of old days. But he no longer drowned in those memories. He was just calm. The past had returned and stood before him. But he was not going to let the past enter his life again.
Kavya was trying. Really trying. But some doors are such that once closed, they never open again. And Arv’s heart had now become just such a door. Kavya hadn’t yet understood this. That getting forgiveness and getting back into a life are two completely different things.
Anyway, Arv’s life was now moving in a very measured manner. Morning meetings, customer problems, staff training, and then in the evening, looking at Lucknow city from his flat window – everything was peaceful. But behind this peace was a deep wall he had built all around his heart.
Kavya came to the office every day, but her steps were not as strong as before. Every day she wanted to say something to Arv. But her voice got stuck in her throat. There was no arrogance on her face now. Only remorse and the guilt of a broken relationship.
One evening, the office was about to close. The staff had left. Kavya stood outside the cabin. Then, gathering courage, she came inside. Arv was closing files. “Arv… do it a little later today.” Her voice was soft and trembling. Arv looked up, but there was no harshness on his face. Just an extremely calm distance. “Yes, what is it?” Kavya took a long breath. “I have thought a lot. A lot. After leaving you, I lost myself too. The emptiness in my life is of my own making.” Arv said nothing. He just kept listening, as if the tune of an old song was coming from afar and hitting his ears, but unable to touch him.
Kavya’s eyes became moist. “Can you? Can you not give us a chance?” This time, Arv looked up. There was no hatred in his eyes. No anger. Only truth. “Kavya, 8 years ago I was broken. Breaking changes a person. I never wished ill for you. But we cannot be together again. Your taunts didn’t just break my heart. They broke my respect too. And respect is the last breath of any relationship.”
Kavya’s face collapsed. She said softly, “So I am nothing to you now.” Arv replied gently, with great softness. “I’m sorry. You are a part of my past. But there is no place for you in my future.” Kavya sat down on the same chair as if someone had drained her strength. She cried. “I have really changed.” Arv said in a calm voice, “I have changed too. But our changed paths don’t meet each other anymore.” Kavya did not fall at his feet. But her eyes were saying so much that words were not needed.
After a while, she stood up. Wiped her tears and slowly walked towards the door. Reaching the door, she turned for the last time and said, “I will always be indebted to you because you showed me my real face.” Arv said nothing. Just nodded slightly.
That night, outside the bank building, the air was very calm. Kavya was walking alone on the road. Her steps were faltering. But a truth had become absolutely clear in her heart. Regret can bring forgiveness, but not the relationship back.
On the other hand, Arv was looking out from his cabin window. The city lights were shining, and on his face was a faint, very calm smile. He did not hate anyone. He had simply moved on. Where there was no place for the past.
Friends, sometimes life brings a person back to the very place from where they had received pain. But only to prove that that pain can no longer even touch them.
Friends, in relationships, the greatest asset is not money, but respect. If you keep belittling someone repeatedly, then one day that person may forgive you, but will never return. But do you think Kavya should have gotten a second chance, or was Arv’s decision absolutely right? Definitely give your answer in the comments. Your one line can change someone else’s thinking.
