Going to a party at a 5-star hotel, the husband said his wife was a maid, until the wife took off her mask, everyone was surprised. The husband regretted it for the rest of his life…
The party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the husband’s company was held at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, one of the most luxurious 5-star hotels in Mumbai.
Asha Mehra, the good wife, was excited and proud of her husband – Rajiv Mehra, the head of sales at a large company. This year, Rajiv was chosen to speak in front of the entire company – a great honor that Asha always believed he deserved.
But there was one thing she did not expect: Rajiv did not want her to go with him.
– “That place is full of high-ranking people, Asha. If you go there… I’m afraid you will embarrass me.” – Rajiv said, avoiding his wife’s eyes.
– “You are my wife, Rajiv. Why should I be ashamed?” – she asked softly, her voice choked.
– “I know… I don’t fit in that environment. Besides, I don’t have any suitable clothes.”
Asha was speechless. She was indeed not outstanding – a petite figure, tanned skin from washing and cleaning the house all day. After more than ten years of staying at home to take care of the children and doing housework, she had gotten used to the old saris and plain face.
That evening, Asha decided to still come.
Not to disturb, but to understand why the husband who once loved her so much had become a stranger.
She borrowed a classic blue sari from an old friend, lightly accented with delicate silver jewelry. Her hair was neatly tied up, her face lightly made up, and she wore a mask like everyone else. With a pounding heart, she walked into the hotel lobby – where the crystal lights were shining brightly on the walls.
From afar, she saw Rajiv standing next to the director Mr. Khanna, surrounded by young, elegantly dressed colleagues. A beautiful young girl, Ritika, the new employee in the room, suddenly smiled and said:
– “Rajiv, who is that? He looks so familiar yet strange.”
Rajiv turned around and saw Asha standing at the entrance. For a moment, his face changed color. But he quickly forced a smile and replied:
– “Ah… the maid at my house. I don’t know why she came here.”
The group burst into laughter.
One person teased: “The maid knows how to choose a beautiful blue sari!”
Another person pouted: “No maid can enter the Taj Mahal Palace…”
Asha stood there, her heart broken. Her ears were ringing. She couldn’t believe that her husband who had sworn to love her for life could say such cruel words.
A tear fell. But she didn’t run away. She walked slowly to the middle of the hall, then slowly took off her mask.
No one said anything. For a few seconds, the whole auditorium was silent.
The soft golden light reflected on Asha’s… delicate face. Her fair skin, deep black eyes, and slight smile stunned everyone. She didn’t look like a maid at all — but like a classy lady stepping out of the cover of Vogue India.
A colleague exclaimed:
– “Oh my god… is this Rajiv’s wife?”
Another whispered:
– “I thought she was a model attending the event!”
Rajiv was stunned. His face was pale, his eyes wide open, his mouth moving but he couldn’t say a word. In the eyes of his colleagues, he suddenly became small, insignificant, and… humiliated.
Asha approached, smiling slightly:
– “Sorry, I’m a bit late. I heard that Rajiv’s company is having a big anniversary celebration, so I wanted to congratulate you.”
Her voice was clear and calm, making the entire audience feel cold.
Then she turned to Mr. Khanna, bowed slightly:
– “Congratulations on the company’s brilliant development. I was your tax accountant a few years ago, do you remember?”
Mr. Khanna’s eyes widened, then he smiled brightly:
– “Oh my, it’s Asha! Back then, you quit because you had a child, and everyone felt sorry for you. You work meticulously and intelligently, everyone loves you!”
The whole table was in an uproar. The mocking gazes from earlier were now filled with pity. Rajiv lowered his head, sweat dripping down his forehead. He just wanted to disappear from there.
Asha looked at him, her eyes both sad and determined:
– “I just want to say one thing, Rajiv. No one is born low — only people make themselves low when they look down on the people who love them.”
Then she turned her back, walking away amidst admiring gazes.
Rajiv ran out the door, but only had time to see her figure disappear into the Mumbai night street, brightly lit with lights. On his hand, the wedding ring she took off and left on the table was still warm.
That night, Rajiv’s speech – which should have been the most glorious moment of his career – turned into an unforgettable humiliation. He stuttered, forgot his words, and the director’s disappointed eyes made him choke.
After that night, Rajiv lost all honor and trust from his colleagues. As for Asha – who was invited back to work at the old company – she quickly became the chief accountant after only two years. She bought a small apartment in Pune, lived peacefully with her son, confident and proud as if no one had ever hurt her.
As for Rajiv… many years later, sitting in the old coffee shop overlooking the crowded street, he still wondered:
“If only that day… I hadn’t opened my mouth to say the two words ‘housekeeper’.
