Hearing that my ex-husband was marrying a disabled woman, I dressed up and went to the wedding venue to mock him. But when I learned the bride’s true identity, I returned home in a troubled mood.
The news came to me like a strange wind in the middle of a hot Delhi summer.
People said that Rajesh, my ex-husband, was about to remarry.
Three years after the divorce, I – Neha Sharma – thought I had forgotten, had closed my heart to all memories.
But just hearing his name, my heart still ached weakly.
But what caught my attention was not just the news of his new wife, but the gossip:
“The bride has a leg disability, has to use a wheelchair.”
“Poor Rajesh, after so many years of not getting married, he married a disabled woman.”
A flash of pride rose in me.
I thought to myself: “The man who abandoned me finally found a disabled girl to marry. Isn’t that the price he paid for his choice?”
That feeling made me feel strangely relieved.
I decided to go to the wedding – to appear gorgeous so that he and everyone else could see that I was still radiant, still worthy, and he was just living a life full of regrets.
I spent the whole evening before the wedding putting on makeup.
A tight-fitting red sari, sparkling jewelry, seductive red lipstick – I looked at myself in the mirror, proud as a queen.
I imagined walking into the hall, surprised eyes turned towards me: “There she is, Rajesh’s ex-wife, so beautiful!”
I smiled with satisfaction.
The ceremony was held at a large hotel in the heart of Delhi.
Shehnai music played, the scent of jasmine and sandalwood spread.
I walked in, head held high, the light reflecting off my red sari making me stand out from the crowd.
Someone recognized me, whispering softly.
The slower I walked, the more I felt my heart flutter with pride.
Then the moment came.
The door opened, Rajesh – in a pure white sherwani – slowly pushed a wheelchair in.
In the wheelchair was the bride – petite, graceful, gentle face, a gentle smile like the morning sun.
I squinted to look closely, and suddenly my heart stopped.
That bride… was… Ananya – my sister.
My whole body stiffened.
The surrounding sounds seemed to disappear, leaving only the sound of my heart pounding.
I stepped back, wanting to believe that I had seen wrong.
But no – those eyes, that smile, that voice – even though I hadn’t seen them for a long time, I still recognized them.
Ananya – the youngest sister I have been apart from for four years since the accident that left her unable to walk.
That day, when Ananya was bedridden, I – in despair because of my cold marriage with Rajesh – chose to divorce and leave, leaving everything behind.
After that, I was busy with work, rarely visiting home.
I did not know that, after I left, Rajesh still stayed, helping my mother take care of Ananya, taking her to physical therapy, encouraging her when she was desperate.
And today… he married my sister.
Rajesh bent down to adjust Ananya’s dress, his eyes gentle, patient.
That look made me realize in shock: He did not choose my sister out of pity, but out of love.
A love that, perhaps, I had never given him before.
Ananya looked up, catching my gaze in the crowd.
Her smile was as gentle as the morning breeze, no complaints, no anger, only a peace that made me feel strangely small.
I quickly turned away, afraid that someone would see my eyes blurred with tears.
That night, I returned to my small apartment, took off each piece of jewelry, each layer of makeup.
The proud woman in the mirror that afternoon was now just a weak person with swollen eyes.
I sat silently for hours, then opened my phone, typed each word with trembling:
“Ananya, I’m sorry. I wish you happiness – sincerely.”
The message was sent, no reply.
Only the words “Seen.” appeared.
But I knew, she understood.
In the following days, I learned to face myself – the woman who used to be complacent, who used to look down on everything.
I understood that there are people who don’t need to prove themselves with a gorgeous appearance, but with their hearts.
Rajesh did not “debase” himself by marrying a disabled person – he only found the person he truly loved, and redeemed my past mistakes.
Occasionally, I still visit my mother.
Once, I saw Rajesh pushing Ananya around the park.
They were laughing and talking happily, their little daughter sitting on her mother’s lap, her eyes sparkling like the late afternoon sunlight in Delhi.
I stood far away, smiling slightly.
Now, I am no longer jealous, only feeling strangely peaceful.
It turns out that true happiness is not standing higher than someone, but knowing how to bow down and look back at what you have lost.
And love – even if it comes late, even if it comes in a different form – can still heal everything
