I was eight months pregnant and still struggling with all the housework. While mopping, I accidentally bumped into my mother-in-law. Immediately, she cursed me and poured a bucket of dirty mop water on me. I slipped and fell to the floor. I struggled to grab the mop, and that’s when things really started…
I was eight months pregnant.
My belly was heavy, my back ached, and every step was difficult.
Yet, in this house in the suburbs of Delhi, I was still the one doing all the cleaning.
My mother-in-law said bluntly, without a hint of remorse:
— “You’re pregnant, not sick. Indian women used to work in the fields after giving birth.”
That day, I was mopping the living room floor.
The mop water was still cloudy, and the pungent smell of chemicals assaulted my nostrils. I bent low, gasping for breath as I mopped, my hands trembling with exhaustion.
Suddenly, I lightly bumped into my mother-in-law from behind.
It was just a very light touch.
But she spun around, her eyes wide:
“You wretched girl! You can’t even clean the house properly!”
Before I could even open my mouth to apologize, she grabbed the bucket of dirty water and dumped it all over me.
The water was ice-cold.
Dirty, foul-smelling, and soaking me completely.
I slipped.
I fell heavily onto the stone floor.
My stomach hit first—a sharp pain shot straight up to my chest, making it impossible to breathe.
Panicked, I tremblingly grabbed the mop to prop myself up.
And that’s when everything really started.
“WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?”
A man’s voice rang out from behind me.
My mother-in-law turned around, her face still grim:
“You disrespectful daughter-in-law, I’ll teach you a lesson!”
I looked up.
It was my husband—Arjun.
But it wasn’t the usual silent, resigned expression.
He stood frozen, staring at me, soaking wet and dirty, one hand clutching my stomach, my face pale.
He rushed over, helping me up, his voice trembling:
“Where does it hurt? Is the baby alright?”
Before I could answer, the contractions came, the pain so intense I burst into tears.
My mother-in-law stepped back, stammering:
“It’s…it’s alright…it’s just that he’s clumsy…”
Arjun looked up.
For the first time in his life, he raised his voice at his mother:
“How many times have I told you?
The doctor said not to let her do any heavy work!”
He turned to me, gripping my hand tightly:
“I’m sorry…for making you suffer so much.”
Then he turned to look at his mother, each word falling icy cold:
— “If anything happens to my wife and child today,
I will sue you for domestic violence.”
The house fell silent.
My mother-in-law was stunned.
She had never heard her son say such a thing.
Neighbors heard the commotion and came over.
I was taken to the hospital that night.
AFTER THE FALL
Fortunately, my child was unharmed.
That night, as I lay in the hospital bed, Arjun sat beside me, holding my hand tightly:
— “After the birth, we’ll live separately.”
— “No one has the right to humiliate your wife.”
— “Not even your mother.”
I turned away, tears wetting the pillow.
Not because of the pain.
And for the first time, I understood something:
👉 There are women who don’t fall because of a slip…
but because they have stood for too long in silence.
👉 And there are moments,
only when you fall,
do you begin to be protected.
