I’VE NOTICED WHEN MY HUSBAND DRIVES OUR CHILD TO SCHOOL, IT TAKES HIM AN HOUR — SO ONE DAY I FOLLOWED THEM AND DISCOVERED THE REAL REASON WHY HE DIDN’T WANT ME TO DRIVE
I’ve noticed this for a long time. Every morning, when Ryan drives our daughter Ella to school, it always takes him over an hour to get home. Even though the school is only five minutes from our house.
And whenever I ask him, he just gives me a simple answer—”Traffic, Love,” with a smile and a kiss on my forehead.
But one day, while I was in the kitchen preparing Ella’s lunch, I noticed something strange in Ryan’s behavior. It was as if he was hiding something. He was staring at his watch, over and over, and when I hugged him before they left, I felt his heart beating fast.
I don’t know if it was jealousy, nervousness, or simply a wife’s hunch. But I followed them that day.
I quietly started the car and followed them from a distance. Ryan was driving slowly, while Ella smiled behind, singing her favorite nursery song. When they reached the school gate, Ella got out and Ryan walked her inside.
But instead of immediately returning to the car, I saw him walk to the other corner. There, in front of the old bakery, he stopped. I saw him stop in front of an old woman sitting on the sidewalk—carrying a basket of bread and with a limp on one leg.
I saw Ryan bend down, pick up the bread, and put it in his bag. He seemed to be counting it.
“Is that her…” I whispered to myself. “Is there another woman?”
But when I noticed him take out his wallet and hand the money to the old man, I was stunned.
Ryan’s face, which I often saw tired and serious, was now calm and full of care.
I couldn’t help myself anymore. I approached.
“Ryan?” I called, my voice trembling.
He turned around, surprised.
“Love? What are you doing here?”
I didn’t know whether to get angry or laugh.
“I should be the one asking that. I thought it was traffic?”
He smiled weakly, clearly caught in the act.
“I didn’t tell you because… I knew you would cry,” he said. “She’s Aling Rosa, the one who raised me when I was a child. She doesn’t have a family anymore, and since she had a stroke, she’s been selling here every day. Whenever I drop Ella off, I stop by here to bring her food and buy her bread. I don’t want to brag about this, because… I want to help her quietly.”
I bowed my head.
There was no word for a few seconds—only the wind and the sound of children laughing in the distance.
I approached Aling Rosa. “Good morning, ‘Nay.”
She smiled, even though her hands were shaking. “Ah, you’re Ryan’s wife. You’re such a kind daughter, hija. He always tells me not to be shy. Even sometimes, I try not to cry when he gives it to me.”
And there, I couldn’t hold back my tears.
I thought Ryan was hiding something because of the woman. But the truth is, he was hiding the goodness of his heart.
From then on, every morning, we would drop Ella off together. And then, the three of us would pass by Aling Rosa. Ella was the first to approach and say, “Lola Rosa! Here’s your milk!”
As the months passed, Aling Rosa became like part of our family. Every Sunday, we went to church together, and that’s when I saw how important simple kindness is that doesn’t need to be shown off.
One day, before we left church, Aling Rosa held my hand.
“Son, thank you. I never thought I would feel like family in my last year.”
I smiled, although there was a weight on my chest.
“You are not just our family, Mom. You are the ones who proved to us that true love is quiet. But deep.”
When Christmas came, I couldn’t hold back my tears as I watched Ryan and Ella put up a lantern together outside the house. Beside them, Aling Rosa, sitting in a wheelchair, smiled as she watched us all.
And that’s when I realized—sometimes, the secrets our loved ones keep aren’t because of betrayal or hiding… but because they want to protect their goodness from the world’s judgment.
The time I thought Ryan was spending with someone… turned out to be time of kindness, concern, and true love.
And with each passing morning, as we held hands to deliver Ella, I knew I had found not only the truth… but another reason why I loved her.
