On the wedding day, my normally docile dog suddenly rushed to bite the groom and the horrifying truth that I never knew
On my wedding day in Mumbai, the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, making the bougainvillea petals flutter in front of the gate. The whole family was busy welcoming guests, the Sufi music was resounding throughout the neighborhood. I wore a pure white lehenga, walking out in the eyes of everyone congratulating me.
The groom – Arjun – smiled as he approached, holding a bouquet of marigolds, his elegant appearance made everyone compliment: “What a good boy, good girl, a perfect match.”
But the moment he stepped to the gate, Sheru, the dog I had raised since childhood, suddenly roared fiercely. Then, as if sensing a premonition, it rushed straight towards Arjun, barking madly and biting his trouser leg!
The barking echoed amidst the music, chaos. The wedding guests were startled, my mother ran out and scolded:
– Sheru! Are you crazy, today is a happy day!
But Sheru didn’t stop, it tore the groom’s pants, its teeth digging in as if it wouldn’t let go. Arjun’s face turned pale, he quickly kicked his leg, causing Sheru to fall to the ground. He shouted loudly, his voice losing control:
– This damn dog!
The whole wedding hall fell silent. I was stunned. I had never seen him like that. Arjun quickly forced a smile:
– Sorry, I’m just afraid of dogs… maybe it saw a stranger.
I nodded, trying to keep the atmosphere, but suddenly an indescribable uneasiness arose in my heart. Sheru was gentle, never bit anyone, why was she so mad today?
The ceremony ended, I took Sheru to the back of the house, it was still lying there growling, its eyes on Arjun who was talking to the adults. When I approached, it whimpered softly, then turned away, as if to say: “Be careful!”
That night, I couldn’t sleep. The suspicion grew. I turned on my laptop and opened the old security camera I had saved – a memory I had tried to forget: the burglary two years ago.
That day, in the middle of the night, three strangers broke into my house in Andheri, Mumbai. Sheru spotted them and barked fiercely. I still remember the flashlight beam sweeping past, and then a man in a black raincoat kicking Sheru hard, breaking his leg. He roared:
– If this dog lives, I will kill him!
The image from that year was blurry, but when I zoomed in – the small scar under the thief’s chin was clearly visible. My heart stopped. That scar…was Arjun’s.
I trembled, unable to believe it. I tried asking him the next morning, trying to keep my voice normal:
– Have you ever… broken into someone else’s house?
Arjun froze, his eyes averted. I showed him the photo from the camera:
– Is this you?
He was silent for a long time, then nodded slightly, his voice trembling:
– At that time, I was foolish… just following my friend for fun, not expecting you to be the victim. I regret it so much…
I stepped back, tears rolling down. All the words of love and care, all were just a cover for someone who had entered my house with a knife, had almost killed Sheru. I took off my wedding veil, looked straight at him:
– It turns out, something more loyal and kind than humans… is a dog.
I bent down, hugged Sheru. It wagged its tail gently, its eyes lit up as if it understood that I finally knew the truth.
That day’s wedding stopped. Arjun was taken to the police station in Mumbai.
As for me, in the rustling afternoon wind, I only heard Sheru barking softly – relieved, as if she had shed two years of injustice
