Kailash Patel is now over seventy years old. His wife died early due to illness. Single-handedly, he raised his son, Rahul. Working on land left by his parents in a town in Surat, he worked day and night, saving a fortune to build a nice two-story house for Rahul, and arranged his marriage with all the rituals. He thought his life was now content, and he just wanted to live comfortably in his old age, surrounded by his family.
But who knows fate? A person’s heart changes.
When she first became a daughter-in-law, Priya, Rahul’s wife, always showed respect to her mother-in-law. But when they had their first child, a boy, her behavior completely changed. She whispered to Rahul:
“Rahul Jaan, we have such a large piece of land, which is still in Mother-in-law’s name. If something were to happen, it would be a problem, right?”
At first, Rahul would refuse:
“Hey Priya, that’s father’s land, the earnings of his entire life. He’s our father, he’ll give it to us after all. Why are you worried?”
But Priya didn’t stop. She filled her husband’s mind with sweet but clever words:
“You’re too naive. Bad times can come at any time. What if your mother-in-law gives in to someone’s pressure and sells it or donates it? They’re old people, they’re easily fooled. It’s better we get them to change their names now.”
As the days passed, these whispered words began to prick Rahul’s head like thorns. He began to look at his father differently. Instead of being grateful, he became suspicious and jealous.
One evening, while eating roti and vegetables, Priya confronted him directly:
“Father-in-law, you’re old. How will you manage so much land alone? Won’t you transfer the land to both of us? Let us manage it.”
Kailash listened, put down his plate, his eyes filled with sadness:
“Son, this land is a symbol of our ancestors. I will take care of it until my eyes close. Don’t worry, I never even think of selling or giving it away.”
But Priya didn’t agree. She coaxed Rahul, shed tears, and finally Rahul—the only son whom Kailash loved so much—said something that pierced his father’s heart:
“Father… can’t you stay away for a few days? We will take care of this house and land.”
Kailash remained frozen. After so many years of raising him, he never imagined his own blood would want to throw him out of the house. He quietly took some kurta-pyjama, wrapped it in an old blanket, and left the house he had built himself. There were no tears, no resistance from his daughter-in-law, only a heartbreaking silence. Rahul bowed his head, not daring to look his father in the eyes.
Kailash moved into an old friend’s small cottage, located outside the village near a farm. The neighbors were all sorry, but they would say with a sad smile:
“He’s my son, why should I blame him?”
But just a week later, the story completely changed.
One morning, the Sarpanch, the Patwari, and a court official came to Rahul’s house. They had documents stating that the land Rahul and Priya owned was part of the new Surat-Ahmedabad highway expansion plan. Years ago, the government had completed the survey, but Kailash was the only one notified of all the details because of his name. He still had the documents; only the visarjan date hadn’t arrived, so he hadn’t told his son so he wouldn’t worry too soon.
The Patwari said sternly:
“According to the rules, all commitment and restoration funds will be given only to the owner of the land—that is, Mr. Kailash Patel. You two have no rights over it.”
Hearing this, Priya’s face turned pale, and Rahul was horrified. He had thrown his father out of the house, thinking he would take over the entire land, but he himself was freed from the trap of this grand affair.
Within a few days, the news spread like wildfire through the village. People whispered:
“Shameless child, God will never forgive you.”
“Neither land nor honor is left.”
Priya, shedding bitter tears, apologized to her husband for her “narrow mind.” Rahul stood on his knees in front of his father’s daughter, tears streaming down his face:
“Father, I made a grave mistake. I unknowingly fell for Priya’s words. Please forgive me…”
Kailash saw his son weeping with his head bowed; his heart was filled with pain and pity. He said softly:
“I don’t blame you, because you’re my slave. But remember, wealth is all illusion. If you lose your devotion to your father, you’ll never get it back.”
After this, with the heart of a loving father, he didn’t refuse to buy a small house near the square to enjoy and live in his old age. But Rahul and Priya had to search for a place to rent on their own, and experience the consequences of failure. His reputation in the local community of Gujarat also plummeted.
The villagers began to say that this was the tragic outcome of greed and a child’s worth. And Rahul felt it deeply: a week’s mistake cost him his entire reputation and relationships. This story has now become a cultural lesson that parents in this area tell their children.
