The girl the company manager was mocking in front of everyone, thinking she was poor, wasn’t actually poor. In fact, she was a person of such stature that no one had imagined her even in their wildest dreams. And then, when her truth was revealed, it stunned the entire company.
Atmosphere in the Corporate Tower
The atmosphere on the 20th floor of the Utkarsh Group’s corporate tower was absolutely sultry. HR manager Akshat sat in his luxurious cabin. Akshat had achieved great success in his work, but that success had made him extremely arrogant. He felt that by occupying the HR chair, he was a kind of god, before whom every candidate would have to undergo a fiery test.
This thought kept revolving in his mind. How could someone who couldn’t tolerate even the slightest inconvenience or waiting handle the pressures of this company? For him, every candidate was just a number. No emotions, no exceptions.
Veena’s Interview
Today’s interview was scheduled. At 11:00 a.m., a woman named Veena arrived. Her attire was simple but neat. Her face exuded a calm confidence. She seemed neither overly excited nor overly nervous. But her simplicity didn’t fit the corporate atmosphere. The receptionist, who was talking to someone on the phone, pointed to the side without looking up and said, “Please sit. You will be called.”
Veena quietly thanked and went and sat down on her chair. At first, it seemed like it would take a while, but time passed slowly. More than half an hour passed. The candidates sitting around her began to get restless. Some were loosening their ties or jackets, others were repeatedly checking the time on their mobile phones. Everyone’s face was irritated.
Akshat’s Ego
Every now and then, someone would go to reception and ask how long they would have to wait, but the answer was always the same: “The process is ongoing. You will be called.” Veena sat quietly. She didn’t ask any questions or complain. But a flame of anger was building inside her, threatening to explode at any moment.
Just then, a different warmth filled the atmosphere. Reena, a junior employee of the company, arrived. She was about 25 years old. She had a slight smile on her face and a kindness in her eyes. She was an HR assistant, and her desk was near the reception. She noticed Veena had been sitting for a long time. She approached her and said in a soft voice, “Hello. Excuse me. Didn’t anyone call you in?”
Veena raised her head and said, “No. They said I’ll be called.” Reena picked up her file, which the receptionist had left aside, and said, “It seems your file hasn’t reached HR yet.”
Veena’s patience ran out. She went straight to the receptionist and said, “Please send this candidate’s file to Akshat Sir immediately.” Reena handed the file over and returned to Veena. “Would you like some water?” she asked. Without waiting for a response, she brought water from the pantry. “Sorry you had to wait so long. This shouldn’t happen.”
Veena smiled and said, “It’s okay, I’m used to waiting.” Reena smiled back. She pacified the other candidates a bit. She gave them water and explained that the interview would start soon. The other staff members watched in astonishment, as if she had broken some corporate rule.
Akshat’s Attitude
After a while, Akshat ended the phone call. One by one, the candidates went in and returned within minutes. Veena’s turn came with disappointed looks on their faces, but she was still held back. Reena came out and said, “Ma’am, just a little while longer, Sir is busy with some important work.”
Another 15 minutes passed. Now the entire hall was empty. Only Veena, the receptionist, and Reena. Akshat had deliberately wanted Veena to wait. And then, after a while, she said to her assistant, “Call him now.”
Preparing for the Interview
Veena was called in. She opened the door and confidently entered. Inside, Akshat was sitting in his leather chair, accompanied by two other men. Akshat examined Veena’s outfit from top to bottom, as if it were a museum piece.
He deliberately waited a moment before speaking to his friend. “Miss Veena,” Akshat said, narrowing his eyes, “Your resume is good, but let me tell you something. The position you’re applying for requires a little presentability. Don’t you know that this is the Utkarsh Group’s corporate tower. Not a government bank?”
Veena’s Response
Veena glanced at her clean shirt and pants. She said calmly, “Excuse me, sir. I chose the best, cleanest, and pressed outfit for the interview. I believe my work is more important than my clothes.”
Akshat nodded dismissively. “Oh, yes, work. But appearances matter here too. When you meet our clients, you can’t impress them with your simplicity. In the corporate world, your attire reflects your worth. I’m just saying that next time you come to such a big interview, dress a little better.”
Insult to Education
This comment was a direct attack on Veena’s financial situation, and both interviewers sitting next to her lowered their gaze uncomfortably. Akshat then placed his finger on Veena’s resume and asked a question related to her educational qualifications.
“Miss Veena,” Akshat said with a slight disdain in his voice, “I think I’ve never heard of the college you attended. Is it some ordinary local college?”
Veena tried to remain calm, knowing that Akshat was taking a dig at her background. She politely replied, “Sir, my college may not be that famous, but the education there is excellent, and I believe my worth will be proven by my work, not by the name of my college.”
Akshat’s Ignorance
Akshat narrowed his eyes and gave a sarcastic smile. “Oh, of course, by work. But this is the corporate world, Miss Veena. Names and brands have value here. Do you think you can stand up to big clients like us with a degree from this small college? I doubt it.”
Akshat focused his eyes on Veena again for the last question. “Okay, Veena. Last question,” he said, “The figure you’ve written in your expected salary, do you really think your experience and educational background justify that kind of salary? It’s much higher than our normal pay scale.”
Veena’s Confidence
Veena replied without hesitation, “Sir, I’ve kept this figure based on the responsibilities of this position. I believe the skills and experience I possess will give this company much more in return.”
Akshat suddenly burst out laughing. A fake, sharp laugh. “That’s funny. An entry-level candidate like you thinks you can provide value here. Look, let me be clear. Here, we pay based on a candidate’s potential, and right now, you don’t qualify for that, and it’s best to keep your expectations low.”
Veena’s Decision
With that, Akshat checked his watch, closed his file, and with a fake smile, said, “Okay, Miss Veena. We’ll tell you later.” Veena understood this was a form of rejection. She stood up without complaint, said, “Thank you for your time,” and walked out.
Reena walked toward him, a look of deep concern on her face, and clear displeasure with Akshat’s attitude. “I hope everything went well,” she said. Veena smiled, but it was now very faint. “Yes, everything went well. But maybe this place isn’t for me.”
Reena’s Support
Reena said softly, “It’s okay. You tried.” Some people, looking at the undamaged cabin, didn’t finish their sentence. But her meaning was clear. Then she said to Veena, “Don’t doubt your abilities. Your humility and calmness are more valuable than this place.”
Veena bowed her head, thanked, and headed toward the elevator. Reena watched her leave. A deep sadness filled her heart, as if a good person had been lost forever by the arrogance of this place.
The Next Day’s Bustle
But what was to happen the next day was something no one could have imagined. The atmosphere in the Utkarsh Group’s corporate tower in Gurgaon had completely changed. Where there had been carelessness and arrogance yesterday, there was now nervousness and lightning-fastness.
From the elevator to the 25th floor HR department, whispers rang everywhere. The buzz was abuzz with big news. A new CEO was arriving at the company today. Akshat’s cabin, which until yesterday had been a haven for phone calls and relaxation, resembled a war room.
Akshat’s nervousness
The confidence on his face had vanished. Now, lines of tension and unease were etched into it. Around 11:15 a.m., the company’s board of directors and senior managers began gathering in the meeting hall. Akshat was seated at the front. He held the presentation remote in his hand, but his fingers were trembling.
At 11:30, the meeting room door opened, and Mr. Agarwal entered. Behind him was the man whose arrival would change the entire company. As soon as the new CEO entered, everyone’s eyes were fixed on him.
Anshika’s Arrival
As soon as Akshat saw her, his eyes froze for a moment. He couldn’t believe his eyes. His face first turned pale, then red with embarrassment and nervousness. Mr. Agarwal stepped forward, took a deep breath, and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to introduce you to our company’s new CEO and main investor, whose name is Ms. Anshika.”
It was none other than the same Anshika who had given the interview as Veena. As soon as this announcement was made, Akshat trembled and touched his throat, as if having trouble breathing.
Anshika’s Speech
The other managers sitting next to him looked at each other. Confusion and fear were clearly visible on their faces. The same quiet candidate from yesterday was today the company’s biggest face. It was impossible to believe. Anshika stepped forward and slowly began speaking in a confident voice.
“Good morning everyone.” She said, “I came here yesterday, not as a candidate, but as an examiner. I was disappointed to see this.” Anshika said, “The people in high positions in this company are so shallow in terms of character that no one can even hope for.”
Confronting Akshat
“Mr. Agarwal, do you know what the standards of your HR department are? How people who come here are deliberately humiliated? How their educational backgrounds, their clothes, their hard-earned money are mocked?”
Akshat whispered, trembling, “Ma’am, that was just a pressure test.” Anshika narrowed her eyes. “A pressure test. Mr. Akshat,” she said in a deliberately formal tone, “A pressure test is to ensure you perform like a true and honest employee even under adverse circumstances. What you did wasn’t a pressure test; it was pure arrogance and misbehavior.”
Akshat’s Dismissal
She walked from her seat and stood directly behind Akshat’s chair. It was a power move that instantly put Akshat in a vulnerable position. In a low voice that echoed through the hall, she said, “Yesterday I endured three humiliations here. First, I was deliberately made to wait. Second, my simple clothes and college status were ridiculed. And third, my hard work was belittled by dismissing my salary demands as charity.”
Anshika looked at Akshat and said, “An arrogant manager like you is poisoning the company culture. And I simply cannot tolerate this. I rejected you yesterday for the sake of humanity, and today you are rejected from my company as well.”
Silence and Respect
Akshat stood trembling. Anshika ordered emotionlessly, “Akshat, I am dismissing you from your position with immediate effect. You must vacate your desk immediately. We don’t need people like you. Our company doesn’t need bosses like this, but people who know how to respect others.”
The hall fell silent. This was a harsh lesson. Akshat, accepting defeat, walked out of the hall with his head bowed and eyes filled with tears. His pride was shattered in a second.
Respect for Reena
Anshika returned to the scene. Her eyes were now fixed on Reena, who sat with a mixture of shock and joy. Anshika’s voice had softened slightly, but it still held authority. “Now let’s talk about true leadership. Yesterday, when the entire HR department was showing off its power, there was one person who, without any position, showed his heart simply out of humanity. He gave water, helped, and respected me.”
Anshika smiled and pointed to Reena. “Reena, I am deeply impressed by your kindness, your sensitivity, and your humility. This company doesn’t run on resumes alone. It runs on humanity, because humanity is the greatest religion.”
Reena’s New Responsibility
She announced to the audience, “I appoint Reena as the new HR Head of the Utkarsh Group, effective immediately. She will humanize the culture of this department. Her journey from a simple assistant to HR Head proves that character, not position, is the true qualification.”
Reena wept with joy. The hall erupted in applause. She stood up and thanked Anshika, whose eyes sparkled with satisfaction.
Conclusion
That day marked the beginning of a new chapter at the Utkarsh Group. One where humanity was given equal importance, not just ability. And the story conveys this message: Ego is always made to be broken, while true character paves the way to great heights.
